Note
(rest day)

Overall fairly happy with the JK - certainly when considering placing as opposed to performance. Fared better than my only previous foray into elite (57/67; http://www.siresults.co.uk/2011/JK/overall/m21e.ht...) and enjoyed the middle / long combination.
However, I am hoping that this doesn't represent my peak...

Orienteering race 39:19 [4] 6.73 km (5:51 / km) +120m 5:22 / km
shoes: Integrator March 2014

JK Relay Pwll Ddu.
First Leg on JK Trophy for my NOC Relay debut.
Haven't got the speed for first leg at the best of times; on a highly visible area with yesterdays race in my legs the plan was no errors. Pretty much achieved that, went straight to my gaffle every time, although perhaps there were some better route choices and certainly some better lines in the tussocky marshy area, where I seemed to be going backwards.
Surprisingly started to feel better by the end, but as I looked to push on I started cramping up so had to cruise in.
Only beaten by a couple of 'senior men' and the team finished 20th, which seemed fairly respectable.

Orienteering race 2:04:25 [3] 20.0 km (6:13 / km) +350m 5:43 / km
shoes: Integrator March 2014

JK Long Llangydnir.
Poor start to #1 - initially crossed the small path before realising that I hadn't climbed enough [90]
Religiously followed by bearing for the next couple and caught my 3min man at #3.
#4 Dropped too far down the re-entrant to the pond and had to climb back up the small path [20]
Slow but secure to #5, but very hesitant to #6 and started looking too soon [15]
Pleased with the next few, and had left my man behind, but then made a mess of #10; no bearing and I ended up way to the south. Fortunate to spot the grass indicative of pond / marsh from afar [80]
Wobbled around on the way to #11, not always sure where I was, but not disastrous.
#12 Switched off after passing the big crag and visited all the crags in the vicinity rather than reading the map. Got there just as my man caught me up... [90]
Took the fairly obvious roundabout route to #13, but lost time in the second half of the leg by going to the east of the ridge. Had pulled away from my man, but we reached the flag together. This was the last I saw of him. [60]
#14 Executed well, pleased.
No other problems after this - as my pace slowed I made sure I kept in touch with the map and this kept things clean.
Pleased (and surprised) to still be running (my definition) at the end!

26 of 50 (+6) on the Day.
24 of 47 (+28) Overall.

Orienteering race 38:40 [4] 7.5 km (5:09 / km) +120m 4:46 / km
shoes: Integrator March 2014

JK Middle Merthyr Common.
Focus was on the navigation - that was nearly there - but running was fairly abysmal. Nothing in the legs at all. Hesitant with the ankle over anything steep or rocky but it held up.
Not a great start - too low for both #1 [30] and #2 [20].
Caught my 2min man Darren Burke at #4 where he had gone walkabout. Thereafter followed a repeating cycle of him easily pulling away (often out of sight), making an error, me catching up / briefly overtaking, them him accelerating away again.
When I bothered to take a bearing I was fine, but wasted some time at #9 [20] and #10 [30] by omitting this simple step.
Then screwed up the penultimate control by following the wall rather than the ditch. Idiotic [25]
Surprisingly good position (actually bettered my 22nd seeding!) albeit 9mins behind Hector.
Tomorrow will be tough...

Event: JK 2014

3 PM

Orienteering race 17:03 [4] 3.78 km (4:31 / km) +43m 4:16 / km
shoes: Karrimor Excel Dual

JK Sprint Swansea University.
Fairly straightforward area; sussed out most of the map in the start lane.
Worst error probably at #1, where I was caught out by how quickly everything came up, so overshot the first lot of steps [10]
Got some of the 'which way round?' routes wrong, but there was never too much in it so for a punter such as myself I wasn't overly concerned.
Tweaked right ankle a little which was of more concern...

Orienteering race 44:59 [3] 7.74 km (5:49 / km) +92m 5:29 / km
shoes: Integrator March 2014

WJS Event at Clydach Terrace, Blue.
Similar distance to the forthcoming middle distance - the omens are not good.
Struggled to get into the map and lost some time on the first couple. Improved a little, other than control circle errors at #3 and #8. Didn't look at my compass for #10 or #11 which I mustn't repeat at the weekend. Long slog to #12 - switched off at the end of the leg - something else to avoid, especially as I did exactly the same on the next leg to #13, adding 100m or so plus 20m climb!
Not too bad for the remainder but need to take straighter lines - avoiding the climb is not always possible.
4th place, 7mins down on a foreign M18 - time loss ~5mins but no splits.
Hopefully some lessons learnt but I wouldn't count on it.
