DNC MAROC Bogendreip (not Coull)
#1 Had a bearing, was following it, but then became distracted by the freezing marsh which we were immediately sent into. Drifted east [75]
#2 Tried to contour but lost height initially. Re-climbed around green but evidently did the same again; ending up in re-entrants NW of control. Mistakenly relocated as being in the gully to the NE of the control. After much running around with little idea eventually relocated from veg boundary corner to N of control [12m+]
#3 Took a bearing and found the control ok (!)
#4 Slightly west on bearing but spotted open then reflector [15]
#5 Drifted down hill from bearing immediately. Searched around before eventually relocating from #2. I was miles away anyway but would argue that this kind of control site is not suitable for use at night [4m 30s]
#6 Had been overtaken by a couple of people at #5; got ahead of them and found boulder attackpoint (with flag for short course verifying it was the mapped one) but then missed pit slightly low. Bounced off open beyond and found it after the others had got past again [2m 30s]
#7 Went via fence corner. Thought I took a bearing but must have simply followed extraction lane as miles too far north (seeing forest road beyond). Another random rock with nothing much to go off [3m]
#8 Missed low, bounced off wall beyond [2m]
#9 Ok! (But was it a fair control at night once more?)
#10 Correct route I think, just overshot at the end as veg mapping didn't make sense [60]
Very nearly last. Probably would have been had I not had some company for the latter half. My only consolation might be that most of the people there probably know the area rather better than I - particularly pertinent when some areas of the map have few features meaning that you've almost certainly visited those features as control sites on more than one occasion... Or is that grasping at straws?
Just about recovered from cold but left calf complaining in the latter half (lots of sitting driving and insufficient warm-up.
