Note

Erl and I went for a float today. Not a typical Missouri float...a sensory deprivation tank! It was a cool recovery experience. I basically fell asleep.

Adventure Race 29:10:00 [3]

No Sleep 30-hr AR w Jeff, David, and Erl in Shawnee Nat'l Forest.

started at midnight on Saturday. so I got up Friday morning, went to work til 11:30a, then met the boys and drove to the race, had dinner, did maps, then the midnight start. raced 29 hours - 1 (average) sunrise and 1 (glorious) sunset. finished just after 5am Sunday, showered, breakfast, awards, then a 3hr nap (in hammocks!) before driving back to STL (i slept in the car a bit). home, unload, another nap, dinner, then to real sleep. so we replaced 2 nights of sleep with a couple naps! pretty good AR bang for the buck.

PROLOGUE - 1 mi, 0000 - 0015
trail run alongside Lake Glendale to get bikes. only 7 teams at this event so it was not congested, nice!

BIKE 1 - 24mi, 0015 - 0245
mostly roads, incl a visit to Sand Cave, part of the Underground RR! we started in the lead w BW but stopped to fix a flat so were about 5-10min back. chose a direct trail route to CP3 instead of around on the roads, our route was slower.

TREK 1 - 13mi, 0245 - 0900
with 60' rappel
Jackson Falls and Bell Smith Springs. we went CCW, towards the rap first. BW was leaving TA just as we arrived, going CW. a couple issues w trails to begin, but worked our way over to CP6 Jackson Falls on top, and the flag was at the bottom w no way down cliff face. so re-directed to nearby CP7 rappel which got us down to bottom of cliff band and back over to 6. so the rap was actually necessary! in the middle of the course we swam a few hundred meters in the creek instead of bushwhacking. that felt great on legs and feet! the final point on our route was CP9 "rock shelter/tip of spur" which plotted on the east side of a creek. there was a nice rock overhang there but no flag. we scoured the area. then David looked at the map and thought there was a nice "tip of spur" on the west side of the creek near the plot. so we crossed and found the dang flag! not sure if mis-plot or wrong UTM but at least we got it.

BIKE 2 - 22mi, 0900 - 1300
"singletrack"

TREK 2 - 8mi, 1300 - 1530
horse trails (Rocky Top, One Horse Gap). we learned our gap at the end of TREK 1 was only 10min over BW. so we hustled on this trek. it went pretty well. the supplemental trail map here was key. i had copied it onto our main map pre-race but not really well so it worked better for David to just have the supp map. took a safe around-route to the final CP closest to TA which i think was CP23. these horse trails were in really nice shape and really cool rock features!!

when we returned back to TA we asked about our gap again and the volunteers (RD's wife and kids) told us that "we tell everyone that the next team is only 10 minutes behind so that they hurry up". so...not sure about our earlier intel? ha.

BIKE 3 - 14mi, 1530 - 1830
Bushwhack Rd. yes it took us 3 hours to ride 14 miles. the trails were so horse-d up, big puddles, lots o mud, just a slog. not really that fun but we just got thru it.

PADDLE 1 - 12mi, 1830 - 2115
Ohio River and Lusk Creek. started by going across (slightly upstream) the Ohio to an island. David took a short nap at the CP while Erl and I caught up and punched. then back across the Ohio (glorious sunset) and into Lusk Creek for and out-n-back trip. on the way back i started getting sleepy but i was cold enough to stay sorta awake. 2 carp jumped into Jeff and David's boat. Jerry provided hot noodles at the take-out!!!!! they were amazing.

BIKE 4 - 20mi, 2115 - 0100
mostly roads. i was so sleepy. fighting hard to not fall over on bike. legs felt pretty good tho. i don't remember much else.

TREK 3 - 10mi, 0100 - 0510
around Lake Glendale. we knew BW had skipped 1 trek and 3 paddle points. so we wanted to clear but at a minimum we had to get 7 out of 10 CPs on this section to win. we were on pace to clear but ran into trail troubles on some of the CPs and bailed without wasting time. i slept-shuffled the first half of this and finally woke up around 0300. tough but i think the previous week's short sleep hours really affected me here. more really cool rock faces on this trek.

overall i felt this was a great race. the trekking sections were amazing. the paddle was pretty good, esp in the creek. the biking was tough...some nice singletrack but mostly muddy horse/ATV trails. just mentally and physically v taxing. some issues w maps, there were more trails in real life than shown, even with RD's overlay and park maps. but this race should DEF be on your list for next year. sweet awards (small wood paddles created by local artist) too!

i am really proud of this team performance. after a not-great performance at T-Rolls we really pulled together and rebounded with a great team effort. we shared pack weight more, encouraged more, and hustled more. there were lots of challenges throughout the course but just solved them one at a time and held it all together until the finish line. go team!

SuperKate had some great race photos! https://www.facebook.com/kate.geisen/media_set?set...

also got a new race penalty idea from SuperKate - a post-race karaoke performance! so at CW8 this year if you don't have your required gear you will be penalized 1 CP and also will have to perform a current pop hit at the awards ceremony.
