Event: CIA 12-Hr AR

8 AM

Adventure Race 11:59:30 [3]

CIA 12hr w Jeff and David.

BIKE 1, CP 1-5
Fort Harrison SP. rode from Race HQ to a shelter to get maps and plot.
then a road ride to get some CPs. i mis-plotted CP5 by 10k! so we added an extra 20k or so out and back. whoops. it was all on flat pavement though so could have been worse. got to the put-in in last.

PADDLE 1, CP 6-8
put-in at Geist Park, paddle across a Geist Reservoir. so many mansions! then portage around dam, put back in in flooded Fall Creek. took out for CP6 about 100m off shore. we saw Rib exiting stating that they could not find it after 60min. but we still tried, found what we thought was the correct reentrant, and nothing. so bailed after about 45min. CP7 at an ice cream shop where the race treated everyone to free ice cream! yum! then take-out.

TREK 1A, w climbing challenge, CP 9-15
short off-trail section into a camp where we climbed a wall w handholds and then ziplined down. then some roads and trails, past Race HQ, to a boy scout camp. not super-great flag placements...had to do some searching in the circle.

TREK 1B, 18 controls but worth 4 CPs
multiple loops around Camp Belzer (boy scout camp). this section was set by Garrison so we had a lot of confidence in the flags, unlike the rest of the race!! we crossed the flooded creek multiple times via "adventure wading" which was definitely NOT swimming which was not allowed by RD. we were not moving super fast but just going direct to each flag. lots of Scouts out doing work projects.

TREK 1C, CP 16
road run from Boy Scout Camp to Race HQ

PADDLE 2, CP 17
we were def NOT expecting to paddle! kudos to RD for fitting TWO point-to-point paddles in a 12hr race! short little route down the flooded creek, took us 15min! over a fun little splashy section!

BIKE 1, CPs 18-27
then a bike back to Race HQ w some CPs in different parks (Skiles Test and Ft Harrison). we started about 6:50pm and got 4 of them but didn't have enough time to get em all (finish at 8pm).

overall we had a solid effort and a good come-back after my mis-plot early in the race. the race was kinda funny in that we bounced from park to park so the surroundings were always changing...residential streets, park roads, woods, creek bottoms, a little bit of everything. i didn't like it that much but for beginners it was probably a good mix. also tough to coordinate all of those permits! so thanks DINO for a good one and hope it comes back next year!

post-race meal w Greg G and Rib Mtn was pretty fun too!

road run from home w Erl and T!!! Tess's first run in a while due to summer temps, even today was a bit to warm for her. 15min EZ, then 20min hard, then cool down. I handed off T to Erl bc she was not ready for "fast". then on the way home she stopped a couple times to roll in the dewy grass so that was plenty for her.

Note

Erl and I went for a float today. Not a typical Missouri float...a sensory deprivation tank! It was a cool recovery experience. I basically fell asleep.
