Red Dog 100 in Jefferson City.

cold at the start. knee warmers, shorts, SS base layer, armwarmers, SS jersey, vest, wisp jacket, buff, LF gloves bike gloves. rolled out in the crowd, close to the back, but i was cold and needed time to warm up. moved into 3rd girl by CP1 (mile 37) 4min down on 2nd, and 8min down on 1st.

continued riding kinda hard and caught 2nd (Dr. Kate) about mile 50. we traded places a LOT. rode together a bit and she is doing CW8 w a 4PF team of first-timers! awesome. i couldn't figure out who was stronger at what...she was climbing better but had higher gearing so i was hoping that was wearing her legs out. but on the flats she would move ahead too. so i guess i was keeping up on the downs? no idea.

i almost missed CP2 (mile 79) because it came up sooner than i thought and not actually at Hamm's Prairie Store. pulled a u-ie in the road and swapped bottles, Dr. Kate was there too. she was away first. i didn't know if she was trying to attack or not, i really did not have any higher gear available to respond if she did/was, but fortunately my tempo speed was enough to hang in.

then about mile 81, Don B and his buddy John rolled up on SS, and we chatted a bit and i gave them the rundown on the battle. all 4 of us glommed together for a bit and then i had an edge on a super-steep uphill out of a low-water crossing. i "attacked" w this advantage and tried to stay ahead. we had a lot of short steep hills leading into Tebbetts (mile 91) which i think helped my cause.

after dropping into the MO River flats i was alone and just tried to drill it for the remaining 17 miles home. checked over my shoulder a lot, couldn't see anyone but didn't ever get a good long look back. in the last 3 miles i did see a lone rider back but couldn't tell if it was Dr. Kate or not. also my ears started itching like allergies and i was a bit stressed. finally made it to the finish line in 2nd girl, 9min behind 1st and 5min ahead of 3rd.

after the race i had a full-blown hives outbreak. i didn't eat anything new or not prepared by me. the only thing i can think of was i ate a homemade turkey sandwich at noon and the meat may have been contaminated?? like the factory didn't clean the machine enough?? kinda scary if that is my tolerance level. anyway i had drugs with me so took a cetirizine (generic Zyrtec) and laid in the W bathroom for an hour. hives and swollen everywhere but after about 45min it started to go down. then i got to re-join the party for tacos and music!

super proud of this effort. i did not give up on myself and gave an even, hard effort for the whole course. enjoyed the back-and-forth w Dr. Kate and it seemed like she was having a great ride too. legs hurt!

Note

OT100 pacing!...supposed to be but Dwayne was in rough shape coming into the mile 65 aid station (Hazel Creek) so he called it and we all chatted in the smelly van for a while.
