Adventure Race 23:49:00 [3]

No Sleep 24hr AR. raced officially w Erl, 2p co-ed team SEEK Adventure, but together w 3p co-ed Rib Mountain as a training for UNE. 1st overall in an extremely warm race. highs in the high 90s, maybe got down to 78 overnight ??

start at 0900 made for decent sleep, thanks RDs!! did a bike drop in the AM, and minimal rush before the start (but not a lot of free time either!)

TREK 1 (CPs 1-7, 10k)
mass start, no one really wanted to push too hard bc it was already 80F or so. ran mostly w our friends Matt and Stephen from Big Dogs, Erl and I were super stoked that they hung on. some trails, some woods, once we popped out on the last double-track we all took pants off to try and keep "cool". ran w Deviate towards the end. we flushed out a wobbly fawn during the trek and saw another one just before the TA, hiding in the grass just inches from us, so cute. ran into TA in 1st w Big Dogs and Deviate just behind. only filled me and Anna's bladders bc we didn't want to take everyone's water.

PADDLE 1 (CPs 8-9, 22k)
carried the banana boats about 400m to the river. put in on the Saline River for a 20ish-k upstream paddle, except the river was flooded so it was basically a lake w minimal current. pretty good paddle, although Rib's boat had to wait for us a bit (3p vs. 2p paddling). sunny but not too hot w the paddles constantly dripping on us. punched CP8 w Deviate but got back into boats faster. however they caught us on the way to CP9 and pulled ahead. both of our boats ran out of drinking water about the same time, but we had about 1hr to go so we thought we could make it OK. came into the take-out in 2nd but some confusion on how to carry the boats to the TA so we all made it there in the lead. we had 10gal of water there staged for our team so we all drank a ton and filled bladders.

TREK 2 (CPs 10-13, 12k)
we did it as mostly an out-and-back, but Kuat passed us with a superior route choice, using a long road run (5k) to avoid climb. it was so hot, and Erl was overheating, so we would not have been able to execute the same route as fast anyway. i thought we moved well and we didn't even wear pants, the woods were pretty nice and a few scratches were worth the ventilation.

BIKE 1 (CPs 14-17, 26k)
on the bikes about 30 min down from Kuat and Erl was overheating. normally he carries a ton of stuff in his pack, but i took everything my mini-pack could handle to try and lessen the load. the roads were nice and the extra breeze was helpful. we kept the pace down a bit but it wasn't helping Erl enough. so I carried his pack and Tim carried my pack and that helped Erl improve a bit. the last 5k of the ride were on horse trails and they were about as good as horse trails can be on a bike (which isn't saying much but at least parts were rideable). we did struggle w CP17, it was hidden in a cave/rock face, when we got there Kuat had been searching for 30min, we found it after another 30.

TREK 3/ROPES (CPs 18-27, 16k)
we rolled into the TA and got UTMs for the ropes points. they were super close to the TA and we didn't have to carry packs, yay! the first CP was in TA and it required one team member to climb a fat rope, gym class style (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=my38_RfsQyo). i tried it and failed after about 2 jumps. Erl raised himself and made it to the top!!!! thankfully the effort didn't put him back in the hole. then we trekked up to the rappel and picked ticks off our legs while waiting. then onto the trek, it was dark by now. on the first CP (24), Tim dropped the map into a rock crevice! we spent a good 20 minutes trying to extract it but it was too dangerous to retrieve. thankfully we had the SEEK Adventure map, which didn't have any routes, trails, or notes marked, but it would have to do. the rest of the trek was pretty good, Tim did a great job in the dark.

BIKE 2 (CPs 28-35)
we got back to TA about 2am or 2:30 AM i think, TA'd back to bikes, and rolled out. it was a mostly trail ride back to HQ, and Tim did an excellent job w the nav. we knew we were down about 60min to Kuat, but they passed us going the opposite way around CP30, so we thought they had missed the CP at High Knob and were going back to get it. so that put us back in the lead! i felt really strong on this section. couple bikewhacks in this section that went great, including the last big muscle up the hill to camp.

TREK 4 (CPs 36-43)
arrived back at HQ just before 6AM. one last trek to go, we were def feeling it and needed to really hustle to clear the course. it was about 10k trek and earlier in the day it took us 2h30m, so at the end of the day it would be tough for 3h. but we decided to go for it, the first 3 CPs were right on the money for pacing/nav, but then at CP38 we couldn't find the flag at "base of cliff". it was frustrating. we ended up bailing on it bc we needed the time to get back. then we opted to skip 3 more CPs with rock-like clues bc those had been giving us trouble all race. hit a couple reentrants on the way back and speculated if Kuat would have more CPs. they didn't, so we won!
