FIGsgiving
Andrei had this great idea to do The FIG on the week of Thanksgiving w myself and Lauren Ison. Lauren had already done the course w her team a few weeks back, but wanted to give it another go. Since Erl is out for the moment w ankle fracture, I was solo, and it ended up working best to do the course on the actual day of Thanksgiving. Untraditional, for sure, but what's traditional in 2020? ...NOTHING! Also I was pumped to get a chance to participate in The FIG since usually I can't get away from STL in November due to CW8 prep. Since this year's race is cancelled...time for FIG!

I drove over to Red River Gorge area on Wednesday night, met Lauren and Andrei at the hotel, drank some moonshine, and looked at Lattanzi's track from a few weeks ago. He cleared the course in 11:22 so I wrote down his splits to give us a guide. Andrei had wanted to do the same order anyway so it was a good goal.

Trek 1, CPs 1-10
Headed out just after 7am, no headlamps and light packs, for "the big trek". Lots of climb and lots of trail. I personally wanted more off-trail but for a virtual race, I understand the safety advantages of a more trail-heavy course. The nav wasn't difficult but we did get cliffed out between 9 and 10 (or 10 and 9?) and had to backtrack. Otherwise it was Andrei and Lauren in front and me huffing and puffing, trying to keep up. We finished this trek in 5:30ish, where Mark had done it in 4:00, so I threw out the idea that we would be able to clear the rest of the course. I was hurting at the end of this trek, but taking time to change into dry socks (!) and shoes, and eat a piece of pizza, in TA was nice.

Bike 1, short road ride to TA1
Short, downhill, road ride to TA1 and the only thing I could think of is "ugh, that hill will suck to climb back up at the end of the day"

Trek 2, Indian Staircase
Locked up bikes, changed shoes, and went out on this cool trek. Got a bit messed up in the trails initially but some other park visitors helped us out by walking by on trail a hundred meters up, that helped relocate us. Then we went up the Indian Staircase! It was very neat - again the park visitors helped out by being seated above a place where the trail appeared to disappear, but with them sitting there, we figured there was a way up. It was sketchy for a bit but the rock was pretty grippy, basically we were shimmying up an exposed rock spur. Then ran around the top of the ridge to the rest of the CPs. We weren't sure about a way down, and did get cliffed out a bit, but kept scouting around and eventually found a way back down to the TA instead of taking the trail around.

Bike 2, everything else except CP 13 and the other short trek
