Orienteering 57:37 [2] 5.98 km (9:38 / km) +258m 7:55 / km
shoes: VJ Bold 6

After an alright nights sleep in a top notch spot above a crag with a sick view we had some food and headed out to collect the controls. Forest was awesome and really enjoyed this, orienteered quite well too. Weird weather though, went from being warm sun to snowing then back to sun. Quality couple of days but body feeling it now.

Dark Thistle - Craig a Barns.
Not really looking at map to number one so was a bit miffed when everyone got to a control and it wasn't mine. Realised relatively quickly where we were so ont too bad. At the start of the first loop punched the common one with Dan and Tam. Flowed through this loop well and punched 5 not too far behind Spongey and just ahead of Brutus and Doug. They opened up a bit of a gap up to 6, I didn't really want to push too hard too early on. Came out of the loop a little bit behind Ali and Murray and worked to catch them on the leg to 9. Then we had a nice little group through the second loop and I was feeling good at the front of it. Took a different line to them to 15, opting to stay high and I was coming into it ahead of them, with them coming from the left. Came over a bank and thought, should look just to check this isn't the crag but didn't and carried on down the slope. Sure enough I was suddenly completely on my own and had to head back up. 16 was quite hidden and I was stood right next to it for a while. Lost heart a little bit being on my own but could just about see lights on the way to 17 and seemed to be catching back up to 18 and 19, with Oleg catching me as well. Pretty much followed Oleg through the physical stuff to 20 and wasn't too sure what was going on down there. Passed Dan and Ali coming back up the slope so that was little boost. The n on the way to 21 Iain Embrey and Oleg were stronger and took a better line up the hill so got away a bit but I caught Oleg back up coming into the tchnical stuff. Lost contact and went into the light green with not much clue of where we were. Saw the other group ahead but wasn't sure if they had got 21. Thought it was best to assume they hadn't so let them go, probably my worst decision of the night. Spent some time on my own wandering what was going on, then Tam and Mikey caught up, Mikey said he was just following Tam so I went with that and we did a circle before relocating. Coming out of 21 Tam headed off right but I followed rough compass with Mikey and kept going till we hit the wall. Had a little chat trying to work out where we were, agreed we were to the east of 24 and then ploughed on. Came to a slope and I thought we were right near 22 but Mikey wasn't convinced. I was fairly confident until I saw Tam coming up the other way and he hadn't been there, by which time P had worked out what was going on and had gone. Feeling pretty damn tired by this point. Behind Tam to 23 really struggling and on the way to 24 stopped and had some jelly beans, allowing him to get away a bit. Came to 26 before 25 but realised before Tam and was slightly ahead I think but not sure. Concentration really lacking by now and heading out of 26 I picked up some other path and had to go back up. 27 was brutal and I started to bonk, hard. Very little orienteering occured to 28 and I was walking, feeling really cold and hungry and considering quiting. Came to high and hit 31, came across tonnes of windblown but kept going. Pretty much just walked the rest of the course, feeling sick and needing sugar. On the way to 29 passed Tam on the way to 31. Mind really wandering so was good to see another human. Got through the last few. Don't really understand why I started to bonk after 70mins, not great really. Long walk back to the carpark and then the tent. Sasha got the fire going and spent a couple of hours huddled round it eating a load of junk and trying to feel normal.
