Probally a one-off post, good procrastination for a bit...

Scottish 5k Champs.

Had been looking forward to this one since Allan Scally's, but that diminished somewhat during the poor feels of Cyprus. Thankfully a decent run out on Tuesday seemed to show the sluggishness was out of the legs and all of a sudden the excitement was back: the last few months of racing have been so much fun and I've really enjoyed a little bit of road action, probably because it feels quite nice to run fast sometimes. So I was looking forward to that race feeling, and the whole atmosphere of sweet support and exciting times makes it one of my fave evenings of the year tbh.

Everyone's running strong at the mo, so there was plenty of pre-race hype and tactical chat being had - none more so than Scran and his outrageous insights, plus some real great yo-yo feels from Carcas. Perhaps the line that stuck in my head the most was from Mr Leitch: "everyone's going fast; Kris will go fast...you don't want to be near Kris at the first k".

So when I went through the first k near Kris I was a little nervy. I mean there were plenty of people around in that pack and I was firmly at the back, but still - quick prayer that the legs wouldn't blow up too soon. It was almost a pleasing moment when we went round the loop and all of a sudden things just spread. The pace had been feeling nice and comfy, but I had no idea what it actually was. Part of the fun of these road outings has been just simply racing and seeing what comes from it, so I was keen to not check the pace. And it would probably have been demoralisingly slower than I would like, so just stuck to running hard.

Going past Scran and Nobs at the halfway mark I felt pretty good, but thought I'd let the pace drop a little so tried to pick it up a tad and not let Carcas extend his gap too much. There were a few people on my shoulder going through the arena, and the support was amazing, as ever. If that's how cool it is at the Scottish 5k Champs, I just can't imagine the feeling at London. I really, really want to do that next year.

Anyway, heading out on the lonely 4th km was when the pace slipped a little. Aerobically I was feeling good, but the legs were just tying up a bit. And of course that turn is just not what you want right at that moment, but it was a relief to be heading home. The grind was real, and it took some effort to want to hurt but it happened and soon enough the whole thing was over.

Watch says 15:09, chip says 15:09, gun says 15:12 - pray for power of 10 to say 15:09. Honestly had no idea what it would be whilst running, but not too surprised to see that kind of time. A big, tasty 20 second PB....and for some reason, and I know how ridiculous this is, but feeling a bit underwhelmed. Pleased, of course, but now that sub 15 barrier is just dangling in front of me, and I seriously want to take that one and join the club.

The running from everyone in the various Edinburgh groups is so much fun to watch, the standard just seems to be going up all the time.

I remember reading someone's log when I was about 15 after they had just cracked the sub 16 barrier, and thinking how on earth would I get down to that?! I honestly didn't believe I'd be able to - it's pretty cool to see how your perception of 'fast' changes.
