Leatherwood 50K Race Report

Bash selected this race in the Leatherwood Mountains of North Carolina as training for another big race in Italy we are both doing this summer. We were looking for something with the lots of climbing to prepare us for using hiking poles in the mountains and this race certainly fit the bill. It was very casual, with a small pub at HQ, a few picnic tables and a band shell.

The race course was set in a 5,000 privately-owned equestrian-focused mountain resort property with oodles of intertwined double track trails. The trails are mostly for horses but they all seemed to be lightly used this early in the year. It all made for a really fantastic course, well marked, soft footing and lots of rolling terrain.

The 50k was two different loops, with a chance to stock up on supplies back at HQ.

I wanted this to be a training run so I planned to hang back with Bash, who was on the 80k plan. Truthfully, she was still moving along fairly quickly, so we stayed pretty close much of my race. I tried to lose her after the first half when I left HQ before her but she would have none of that and picked me up around the 30k mark. ;)

Sadly, one of my poles broke at 10k, and so I stowed it and grabbed a stick to replace it. It worked just fine. Nobody that we passed after that seemed at all interested in my odd choice of technical gear. They definitely made a difference.

The highlight of the race was CP Echo where there was a cooler of ice cold beer. It tasted awesome. This should be a CP staple!

My ambit read 45k at the finish so I had been planning for more trail when I finished. I suppose it was just GPS error with all the twisty trails and elevation - yet another pleasant surprise to not have to complete another 5k

Bash looked strong and fit through the whole day and claimed 3rd female!

I would definitely recommend this race, but we heard it may be the last year.
Bash's report will have all the photos!
