Orienteering 1:55:56 [4] *** 10.4 km (11:09 / km) +350m 9:33 / km

Tucson Day 1 Blue. Twisted my ankle on a loose rock. I think the only other time I twisted my ankle orienteering was on this map as well. Its a little sensitive to weight now, but didn't significantly affect my race today and probably won't affect tomorrow's if I'm careful. Two major mistakes each costing me between 5-10 minutes. I wasn't careful out of the start and ended up making a parallel error. I spent some time running back and forth between several re-entrants before I realized what I had done. Otherwise clean on this relatively nontechnical terrain. I did do a good job steering into controls from my attackpoints. I definitely need to work on my fitness.

Sycamore Canyon Nature Preserve. This would be a relatively nice place for orienteering, certainly better than say Camp Scherman, not quite as good as Laguna. I think the word "Preserve" in the name pretty much rules it out though (people have already talked to the rangers).
Sometimes I think that our club is focused on the wrong things. I would love to see more social and training events. I think a guided hike with basic navigation instruction (e.g. discussing contours on a set of USGS maps) in a place like this could do much more than any course in Balboa Park or UCSD to inspire beginners and future orienteers. It would also add a social element to our club which is right now sorely missing.
