Orienteering (race) 1:48:15 [4] ***

Blue course at ICO Ransburg meet. Fun blue course on a good map at a great property. You don't get that within a 2-hour drive every day.

Not a bad effort, but two issues: had a problem with control 15, and was worn down by the all the climb by the second half of the course.

I believe that the control circle for 15 was misleading. It centered on the N-S ravine with the streambed, but the control was actually up a side reentrant to the east about two lines up from the streambed. I don't think the control was actually in the circle. Anyway I ran by the control and then lost more time running around the area to make sure I hadn't made a parallel error. More confusion caused by unmapped structures. Several minutes of walking, standing and cursing. Not sure exactly how much but in excess of 10 minutes.

Going to 14 was interesting. Had to go around an unmapped beaver-created pond. More cursing. Had visions of a Bill Murray-style varmint killing spree. Then heading north to the control, had to navigate across a flat area by vegatation variations, and I am not comfortable with that.

All-in-all the navigation felt easy. I'm getting pretty familiar with this sort of ridge-and-reentrant terrain. It helped that there was ample time to read the map while making slow progress up all the climbs.

Definitely need to work some more hill training into the schedule. Too much walking up the hills.
