Saturday Dec 23

Orienteering 1:05:00 [3]***
technique work at Eagle creek west.

parked at the north end and did some line following through the woods down to the south end of the map.

I've had trouble with maintaining good orientation in races when going from woods to open areas and back into woods. So I circled 8 points on the map, 4 each in the woods on either side of a golf course area. I numbered them 1-4 on one side of the golf course and 5-8 on the other. I wrote the numbers 1-8 on scraps of paper slips and put 1-4 in my left pocket and 5-8 in my right pocket.

I alternately drew the slips from the left and right pockets, and ran to the control chosen. This forced me to run back and forth across the open area 8 times.

It went well. I think that my problem has been that when I came out into an open area, I would get over excited and think that I needed to start running real fast. I lost concentratin on the map because...hey...it's an open area! It should be fast and easy! Too often I would just run fast in the wrong direction.

Today, with just some extra care and focus, it WAS fast and easy.

Friday Dec 22
