Orienteering race 47:00 [5] ****

Two sprint races at OCIN New Years fest.

Finished third in both behind younger legs. First race was fairly clean, with a couple routes that probably could have been somewhat better chosen, and one moment of slight confusion where two controls were close together.

Going into the second race, I knew that I would have to take some risks to have a chance to win. Half of the race was in a strange land of wide trails cut through an area of thick brush. I tried a couple of short cuts through the brush from trail to trail and they backfired. In one case I tried to cut through between two trails that were roughly parallel. What actually happened was that I blundered around a U-shaped type route and ended up on the trail I just left. Didn't realize it until I ran into a large tower structure where a previous control had been. DUOH! Three seconds of profound open-mouthed puzzlement followed by ten seconds of loud cursing.

running 35:00 [3] **

Ran 4.5 on Monon trail. Took Robb Hill map. While running, planned imaginary routes, and then counted lines of climb and descent for each route. This was a little exercise I thought up to help with reading contours while on the move. Had to stop a few times to verify correct counts in complicated map areas.

I actually missed a turn on my real route while concentrating on my imaginary routes....even though I've ran that real route probably >100 times.
