Orienteering 35:00 [3]

Pre-running Day 2 controls. Navigation was much sharper. Only a few small bobbles.

Prime orienteering/tracking experiance came from finding my lost car key, which had been unknowingly dropped when my pocket was ripped open on the last leg.

Orienteering 30:00 [3]

Control pickup in upper region of map. Fast and fun up there. After the really technical wooded hillsides, these open areas where fun and fast. I really have improved...

Had to hit up some of the technical bits twice though, because I though I lost a control bag.

Running 15:00 [3]

Running to the start.

Pre-running Day 1 Controls.

This was great!!! The cool weather and a night of sleep made all the difference. I was keeping in contact, and hitting controls. I realized that my problems are largely due to distance judgement, which had been way off.

Orienteering (Search and Rescue!) 1:00:00 [2]

Guided the PJ's on a sweep of Green-X course.
This was nerve racking! First few controls where sloppy, and a slip on control 3. After that though, I pulled out the master map, and navigation went really well! It was great practice reading details.

Unspecified (Boulder Building) 15:00 [1]

Made a small terrain correction

Orienteering 1:00:00 [3]

Setting and checking control boxes. I did OK with setting out e-punches, although my orienteering was still shaky. I think it had a lot to do with distance estimation.

After boulder building, I went to check Andy's controls and I was destroyed. It was like the bermuda triangle. I couldn't identify anything, and I couldn't relocate. After 15-20 minutes I bailed without finding any controls.

Spent the afternoon just moving gear.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Orange Sauconys

Checking control boxes and picking up controls at Lava Butte. It was really fun to run around in the morning, and the relay was fun to watch.

I can tell that my orienteering skills have improved a lot since the last time I was here. I was much better at recognizing map features in the terrain, and had a much broader field of vision.

I felt a little tired in the afternoon though.

Orienteering 40:00 [2]

First trip onto dutchman map this week, putting out day 1 control boxes.

WOW! Reallity check, my orienteering isn't that good yet. This stuff was way more technical, and map contact was tough.

Orienteering race (Sprint) 16:26 [5] 2.7 km (6:05 / km)
shoes: Orange Sauconys

COCC Campus Sprint course. Blazing fast, really fun. My navigation was super clean.

BUT, I made a 170 second mistake on control 11, leaving the spectator control, going into a rather bland area. As soon as I started this leg, I knew my concentration was bad and I was in trouble. I took a sloppy bearing and veared right. Tried to nav off of vegetation but failed and eventually stumbled into control.

Removing just this mistake, I could have edged out Andy for 3rd place at 13:30.

Orienteering race 54:15 [4]
shoes: Orange Sauconys

Arnold Ice Cave middle distance course. With something to prove on some of my favorite terrain, I started super clean and fast. Running though the terrain felt really good.

But I blew control 6 when my mind slipped and I thought I was navigating to #5. It was a 5 minute mistake.

I recovered ok in short term, and still posted some good splits. But I lost some flow when I crossed the road into the thicker manzinita on the butterfly loop and started making more more nav errors too. One 3.5 minute error on 19 (headed for wrong out of butterfly).

In the butterfly, I was back and forth again with J. C.

Cardiomachines (Elliptical Trainer) 15:00 [3]
shoes: Orange Sauconys

15 minutes to warm up. Did a few intense "intervals" just for fun.
Followed by situps and arm training with crummy apartment gizmo.
