Running 1:30:00 [3] 8.0 mi (11:15 / mi)
shoes: Brooks (White Yellow Black)

Fire Trail. Ran to the end and back. Probably further than I should have gone. Oh well. It was especially nice toward the end as the clouds (fog?) came in and I stopped to enjoy a redcedar grove.

I'm feeling good this evening. I expect to be a lot faster soon.

Event: BAOC: Calero

Note

Well, I hate to miss a good orienteering event, but today just isn't the day.
Partly because I'm wiped out from yesterday's bike ride and 495m of climb doesn't sound fun. Partly because I don't want to spend 2-3 hours in a car, plus $35 in gas and meet fees. Mostly because I have a ton of work due monday, to finish by monday and I'm still swamped after a really late night of studying.

Oh well, there are events pretty much every week next month.
Interesting note: This is a two year aniversary of my first O-meet.

Running 22:00 [3]

Trail run. Short run, long day.

Biking 3:00:00 [3]

35 mile ride with the cal cycling club.

Biking 1:20:00 [3]

Got to warm up the legs for calero. Not that I'll be able to run. The blue course is 7.6 km and 495m climb, yikes!

Orienteering race 53:40 [4] 6.6 km (8:08 / km)
shoes: Inov Terrocs

Long Orange at Presidio. I had a fun time, the park is really pretty. My blistered bruised feet and sore legs were hardly noticable during the run ;-)

There were definately some issues with incorrect control placement or bad feature choices, but I still enjoyed the run.

Orienteering 54:50 [4] 6.6 km (8:18 / km)
shoes: Kainuu Integrators

Long orange course at Coyote Hills. I felt pretty beat up after this one. Lots of contouring on steep hillsides (all sloping to the right), resulting in blisters on my right foot. I got beat by a number of people this time, but if I train like this every week, I will get in a lot better shape!

I was a little cranky when I got back because a 30 minute drive turned into almost 2 hours navigating city traffic. Arrgh! Whenever I have to drive, I want to be back in Oregon, or Finland, or pretty much anywhere with less people.

Biking 1:20:00 [2]

Riding with the Tri Club. Grizzley Peak route.

Thursday Sep 14, 2006 #

Running 25:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks (White Yellow Black)

Fire trail, to cutoff and back. It was getting pretty dark by the end.
Left side of left foot hurt on the way back. I loosened my shoe and it pretty much went right away.

Orienteering race 16:07 [4] 3.0 km (5:22 / km)
shoes: Sauconey Grid 9s

Berkeley Sprint 1.
This combination sprint/motala event was very fun. I felt quite good on the first course, pushing the pace pretty well but running very clean. Only a couple fairly small bobbles.
I definately don't feel as fast as I did a year ago, but I'm pretty close, and a couple months of good training (looking more possible now with the cycling opportunties) should clean that right up. In terms of navigation skill, this summer in europe seems to have helped a lot.

Running 10:00 [1]

warmup/cooldown

Orienteering race 23:01 [4] 4.1 km (5:37 / km)

Berkeley Motala
Moved slightly slower (was somewhat tired after first run) and made a few more mistakes, all in the 5 seconds or less range. Overall, this hurt my minutes per km a little bit, and it also let Mark and Rex pull ahead of me... It's fun having a group of guys to compete with! I'll have to practive hill intervals and get back in shape.

Biking 30:00 [3]

Biking 1:00:00 [2]

Morning ride with the Cal Cycling Club, grizzly peak.
Total ride was about 2 hours long, but I'm discounting it because there was a lot of descent.
Took the hills easier than yesterday.

Friday Sep 8, 2006 #

Biking 20:00 [4]

Climbing the hill from tunnel road. This was nice and tough, I got the heart rate up a bit.

Biking 1:10:00 [2]

Went cycling with the cal cycling club. Overall took about an hour and a half. There were some steep parts, but most of the ride was fairly low intensity. (Neglecting steep downhills, which are quite intense, but don't really provide a workout)

Wednesday Sep 6, 2006 #

Running 7:00 [4] 1.2 mi (5:50 / mi)
shoes: Sauconey Grid 9s

Ran to my car (a little over 1 mile), so I wouldn't miss my DMV appointment. Since I only took 7 or 8 minutes, I must have been running quick!

Biking (Road) 1:00:00 [2]

Did an easy ride with the Berkeley Tri-Club. It was totally spur of the moment. I ran into them gathering up while I walked home from class, and then sprinted to change and grab my bike. It was a nice ride, but I lost them about halfway through.
Remarkably enough, the reason was that I passed a guy on mountain bike with a BAOC jersey and slowed to to talk with him ;-)
Anyway, I was nice to get out riding, and I'll probably join this group again next week. They seem nice even if they did drop me. And my 1st metatarsal is acting up now, so I do need more cross training.
