Orienteering race 1:52:17 [4] 12.8 km (8:46 / km) +230m 8:03 / km
shoes: Green Integrators

NAOC long. Pretty sloppy navigation in spots, several 2-3 minute mistakes. Need more practice running through the woods. Nice terrain though, I had fun.

Running 15:00 [2] 1.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Orienteering race 53:00 [4] 6.2 km (8:33 / km) +160m 7:34 / km

Middle Distance at NAOC.
This was a fun fun day. Wet and muddy. Rained all morning, and if that wasn't enough, there were two pond crossings.

The map was rather detailed, and terrain fairly complex. My biggest confusions came from the many hill tops with depressions on top. You had to read very carefully, or you would overestimate hill size. Minor ankle twist, running on the road.

Navigation was cautious and slow, but relatively clean. I picked up the pace on a few of the later controls. I can still improve my times A LOT by picking cleaner lines through the woods, and drifting less from my route.

Orienteering race 11:13 [5] 2.1 km (5:20 / km)
shoes: Kainuu Integrators

Sprint Races at Green Lakes.
First Race was pretty easy technically, I ran very clean and fast. A couple fastest splits. It is fun to compare against a field of 60 though, and see how much time can be lost on relatively minor bobbles.

Orienteering race 20:56 [4] 3.5 km (5:59 / km)
shoes: Kainuu Integrators

Second course of the day. A technically harder course, and I was much less clean.

Biggest mistake was a 40 second error, when I ran straight past #10 to #11, before turning back. It took me some time to regain mental focus, and I had several ~5-10 second bobbles in the interim.

Hiking 2:00:00 [1] 8.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
shoes: Grid Cohesions

Walked 8 or 9 miles into town

Orienteering 45:00 [1]

Control pickup at Mendon Ponds, in the dark.
My headlamp was really dim, I could only see about 10m in front of me. It was more stumbling than running, but challenging from a navigational perspective.

Knowland Park

Orienteering 17:19 [4] 2.8 km (6:11 / km)
shoes: Kainuu Integrators

Sprint at Knowlend Park. A 10 second hesitation at the start, adjusting to the map. And a 1 minute mistake on control #10.

Nice courses though. Very runnable and flat considering the steepness of terrain. Very technical, sometimes pushing the edge of the map's limits.

Running race 38:57 [4] 10.0 km (3:54 / km)
shoes: Grid Cohesions

Palo Alto Moonlight Run. 10km. Course

Kimberly talked me into doing this, and I'm glad she did. It was a very fun run, and tasty blueberry cake afterwards too. In addition to Kimberly and Grandpa, I saw a couple other BAOC runners there, as well as an OSU grad.

The run was very flat, out along the Bay. It was really nice running in the dark - you couldn't tell how badly you were being beaten ;-) I feel like I paced myself pretty well. I was able to target runners, catch up, and then draft to recover. My legs feel remarkably fresh afterwards, and I even beat somebody on the kick! Perhaps the pace is a little less stressful than the 5km, or perhaps the new ways I've been tinkering with my form are effective. But, my Vdot says I should be able to run this faster, so maybe I just ran slow. For my next 10 km, I will probably run slightly more aggressively.

Oh yeah, and I won a medal ;-) 3rd place in my age group.

Orienteering race 23:00 [4] 3.7 km (6:13 / km)
shoes: Grid Cohesions

Merritt College Motala. Rex has produced another very nice little sprint map. I wish a few more fast runners had come out, it would have been really fun to race into the finish with Mikkel or Francois.

I took GPS tracks, and they lose a lot of accuracy when you are near a building.

Running 22:00 [2] 2.5 mi (8:48 / mi)
shoes: Grid Cohesions

Cooldown trail jog in the part east of Merritt College

Orienteering 10:00 [2] 1.0 km (10:00 / km)

PCTR Redwood Park - Didn't register in time.

Running 50:00 [3] 5.5 mi (9:05 / mi)
shoes: Grid Cohesions

Tilden Park evening run. Stopped several times on account of animals. Mostly deer, but even saw a fox!
I did one of my typical runs in reverse, but didn't really care for it this way. There was lots of sustained uphill, punctuated by hard packed steep downhill. I much prefer the opposite - long stretches of downhill with a few steep uphills.

Orienteering 1:45:00 [3]
shoes: Kainuu Integrators

We decided Fallen Leaf was too slashy, so we went up to Burton Creek and reran this summer's day 2 red course. Without controls, this makes for pretty technical orienteering. There were many times that I found the control feature, but I wasn't 100% sure and had to spend some time and reconfirm.

I got much better at reading vegetation up there, and I felt much more confident. My legs felt much better than Saturday, and I really enjoyed this run!
