Biking 1:15:00 [3]

My ankle still needs rest, and the weather was perfect, so I went on an easy bike ride.

Running 40:00 [3]
shoes: Sauconey Grid 9s

Ran up to the fire trail bench. Was having a nice run, but rolled my ankle pretty well coming down at the connector. So I bailed and jogged the quick way down to put my ankle on ice quickly.

Running 35:00 [3]
shoes: Sauconey Grid 9s

Tilden Park. Redwood Tr to Golf Course Tr up Tower Trail to Grizzly Peak Tr, then out to the road and back on Grizzly Peak Tr.

Fairly easy short run, but I tried to keep a decent pace up for a mile or so.

Running 1:10:00 [3] 8.0 mi (8:45 / mi)
shoes: Sauconey Grid 9s

Orienteering (Mapping) 5:00 [3]

Thursday Dec 21, 2006 #

Running 40:00 [3]
shoes: Sauconey Grid 9s

Tilden Park. Slippery run in the rain on the Selby trail. It's my favorite type of trail, mostly flat with plenty of grade change to keep things interesting. The clay surface was really slippery today with the rain though. It was best when it went under cover of the redwoods.
-Not sure if I'll be mapping tomorrow. I had my laptop and cell phone stolen today, so I don't have all the tools to prepare for the trip. Seems like every time I get optimistic about living in california, something happens to change my opinion.

Running 50:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks (White Yellow Black)

Fire trail to bench and back.

Tomorrow morning I think I'll be heading to Red Bluff, to map around Perry Riffle. Should be back Friday evening. -OK, weather update says 80% chance of rain. Can't map in rain, might go for a quick trip friday though.

Running 30:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks (White Yellow Black)

Fire Trail. To the connector and back. Quite cold out. There was frost at one of the trail bends.

Running 27:00 [2]

Second run for the day. A jog around campus. Lets see if I can use this break to really get in shape.

Orienteering race 1:36:00 [4] 7.1 km (13:31 / km)

Bon Tempe event.
Very fun terrain. The map is simple with few contours, but they are well placed (excepting the hillside of death). I like that style of map - puts more emphasis on interpretation and less on eyesite.

Terrain was great and reminded me of home a bit. I felt like I was running a lot better than last week, although my results were not so good. On a micro navigation basis I did a lot better, but the mistakes I made were signifcantly bigger in terms of time. (Of course, the control was misplaced on two of these occasions, but I still should have made better decisions).

Note

Done with finals. Thank goodness.

Running 45:00 [3]

Fun wet foggy trail run in Tilden Park.
Really nice. The winter weather here reminds me of fall or spring in Oregon. I can't believe anyone would complain about this ;-)

Orienteering race 1:28:00 [4]
shoes: Kainuu Integrators

BAOC champs at Tilden Park.
Glad this meet is finally done. Now I have a training map to use just 10 minutes from home! The race was tough for me, I felt tired both mentally and physically. I just never got a good flow, until maybe the last three controls. On the third control I slipped and fell, straining my shoulder. I almost quit right then, but decided to keep going. Had to play some things safe afterwards, since the terrain was so slippery.
On a positive note: even with a subpar run, I was less than 10 minutes off James, Mikkel, Vlad, and Pippa.

Note

Yes. I'm very very excited to have this park here. Not even a ten minute drive, through a part of town with no traffic. Yes!!!

Running 20:00 [3]
shoes: Sauconey Grid 9s

Went on an easy run to strech my legs

Thursday Dec 7, 2006 #

Running 1:15:00 [3]

Solano road, and up a really steep hill. Tough run, right up with Tyler hill and Extendo.

Tuesday Dec 5, 2006 #

Running 17:00 [3] 2.0 mi (8:30 / mi)
shoes: Brooks (White Yellow Black)

A couple miles at moderate pace (varied between 6:30 and 10:00 miles)

Orienteering 1:05:00 [4]
shoes: Sauconey Grid 9s

Score-O on Stanford Campus
My route was about 9.7 km straight line, which works out to about 6.7 min/km. I ran conservative, so as not to overstrain my legs, but I think that's a pretty reasonable pace considering the distance. Also lost some time waiting for traffic and writing control codes.
There were some errors in route planning. Just two simple mistakes (skipping wrong controls) cost me around 1 km of extra running. But I felt very good about how I kept track of my map position. Only lost focus once in those regards. Had three errors in reading my way into controls - 502, 513, and 519, but two of these I have good excuses.
