Orienteering race 15:19 [4]

Sprint race at Roberts Park. It was a fun course and well designed. Not so much in terms of indivdual controls, but in terms of overall flow. It started out going with some quick decision making, and found myself outrunning my navigation abilities. Then, just as I was getting comfortable with the navigation, things started heading back uphill and I was physically exhausted. Tough

Orienteering (Mapping) 30:00 [1]

Spent the morning at red bluff, and then drove back on 99W through Chico. A nice change from I-5, and chico was a good place to spend the afternoon. There are some funky little coffee shops and Chico State has a pretty campus, smaller than I expected though. It took me a while to find internet access there until I discovered the free downtown wireless broadcasting.

Now I'm back in Berkeley, and awaiting tomorrow's sprint.

Doing more mapping at Red Bluff. It's really beautiful out right now, as you can see below ;-) Lots of butterflys.

I've mapped about 0.4 square kilometers now. A map sample will be coming soon.

Sprint Reverse Chase at Point Pinole.

My seeding on the sprint had me starting second to last, right behind a pack of fast guys (Martin, Francois, Syd, Russ, and Tapio all withing one minute) So there was some real pack dynamics going on.
Coming from the back I managed to use this to my advantage. Since I knew the group would head vaguely the right way, I just had to evaluate their progress for mistakes and places to cut time. This eventually worked, and on two occasions I got in front of the pack (at 7 and 9), but didn't transition to standard navigation well enough to hold the lead. I took a gamble on 11 by taking the straight line, while Martin and Francois took a road. I lost about 5 seconds there and never had the energy to catch back up. By the time the course was over, Martin was over 1 minute in front!

Fun time at Joe Grant. It was really warm today, reaching the low 80's. I was really really thirsty on the course. Navigation wasn't too tricky fortunately. The real trick was in forcing yourself to keep moving.
Had a fun and did pretty well considering my shape. Lots of head to head encouraged me to keep up intensity - Tapio and Vlad in particular.

Top finishers were Eric in 1:06:20 and Martin in 1:11:26.

Another nice run. This one started easy and finished the last mile with a pretty decent pace. Maybe I've got enough in me for Joe Grant ;-)
