Orienteering race 1:31:00 [4] 7.9 km (11:31 / km) +540m 8:35 / km
shoes: Kainuu Integrators

Briones Park. Fun day, brutal steep courses. Not fun for my ankles and legs. Lots of walking uphill, and guarded pounding descents.

Had a decent run overall, but some poor decisions. Gave a ride to Jonas, a new grad student at Berkeley. He ran really well, beat my time by 15 minutes. Hopefully he'll come to more events soon.

Running race 19:10 [4] 5.1 km (3:45 / km)
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline

Did the Lake Merrit '4th Sunday Run" on Easter morning. Very nice weather. It was more of a time trial than a race though, since I was running alone out front. My legs felt stiff - I think next week will be a good week to cross train.

I was a little annoyed by the lack of functioning bathrooms. Also, there had been another race on saturday, making it difficult to distinguish the course markings. I missed a turn, which cost around 25 seconds. It would have been nice for the guy behind me to shout something...

I'll probably run it again someday. Daniel lives conveniently on the course, and the price is right.

Note

Thinking about the race today. Minus the wrong turn, it was probably an 18:40 5K. Not too bad, but not good either. I'd like to be in the 17:30-17:45 range by the end of this training cycle. (Not that 5K is a primary focus, but it's a secondary focus for metrics)

What could make the difference? Having someone to draft would help ;-) But I think two things were holding me back.

First, during the 2nd mile, my pace dropped to 6:06 min/mile. This is very nearly the pace I run my threshold miles (6:12). So in some sense, I think I got stuck in a grove. A couple workouts of focused pace training could help there. Maybe some approximately threshold runs with speed variation.

Second, my legs felt stiff and I was afraid of overtaxing them. Possible fallout from the recent high mileage. I think that wisely placed repetition training, and maybe deep tissue massage are possible solutions?
