adventure race race (s-epic) 12:30:00 [3]
After returning from the trek, we headed out to the ATV park, about 1-115. we were still on pace to clean the course if this went well. well...it didn't; the nav was fine, but many of the trails were difficult to ride, and slow going. still wet from rain, every rock was slick and a potential crash. If teams were planning to skip these were the ones to do so. It was a loop, and once started, are committed. we moved ok, and a little over half-way through kevin, on the easiest, flattest, widest trail, sleepily bumped into the only rock in middle of the trail, and fell over; after a string of words ( possible expletives), we gathered ourselves and took it easy the rest of the way throught the section. This bad luck event put us behind schedule unfortunately and also jeopardized the possibility of even finishing. After getting back to TA, we switched to dry clothes, fueled up and headed out to a 13 mi ridge trek, followed by an 11 mi paddle to the finish; at this point the optionals at the end were likely off the table; bummer because it was 4 pts that were less than 60 min to gather up. the trek was on a trail I would describe as a good hiking trail, however parts were poor running trail; beautiful, and overlooking valley's on each side of the ridge, the sun rose, and we enjoyed a few views while catching our breath, and pushing hard. We took about 3 hrs 45 min, a bit longer than planned, but great considering kevin's ankle, and for a short period, my Rt foot. we ran, hiked, moaned, and tried to keep running. we made it to the paddle TA, 3 minutes and off for the last CP and finishline. At this point, we hadn't eaten anything, nor drank much; we were completely focused on time. Our paddling was lights out: we seesawed on whether we could make in by noon, but kept our heads down. when we were just over 1 k out, we had 3-4 min and I suddenly remembered my watch was ahead of official race time exactly 3 min, game still on. we came in officially 4 min 14 sec over time, thus a 4 pt penalty.
Kevin out easily paced me during the trek, and a tuff mudder-chucker; xray showed a fracture.
