adventure race race (s-epic) 12:30:00 [3]

After returning from the trek, we headed out to the ATV park, about 1-115. we were still on pace to clean the course if this went well. well...it didn't; the nav was fine, but many of the trails were difficult to ride, and slow going. still wet from rain, every rock was slick and a potential crash. If teams were planning to skip these were the ones to do so. It was a loop, and once started, are committed. we moved ok, and a little over half-way through kevin, on the easiest, flattest, widest trail, sleepily bumped into the only rock in middle of the trail, and fell over; after a string of words ( possible expletives), we gathered ourselves and took it easy the rest of the way throught the section. This bad luck event put us behind schedule unfortunately and also jeopardized the possibility of even finishing. After getting back to TA, we switched to dry clothes, fueled up and headed out to a 13 mi ridge trek, followed by an 11 mi paddle to the finish; at this point the optionals at the end were likely off the table; bummer because it was 4 pts that were less than 60 min to gather up. the trek was on a trail I would describe as a good hiking trail, however parts were poor running trail; beautiful, and overlooking valley's on each side of the ridge, the sun rose, and we enjoyed a few views while catching our breath, and pushing hard. We took about 3 hrs 45 min, a bit longer than planned, but great considering kevin's ankle, and for a short period, my Rt foot. we ran, hiked, moaned, and tried to keep running. we made it to the paddle TA, 3 minutes and off for the last CP and finishline. At this point, we hadn't eaten anything, nor drank much; we were completely focused on time. Our paddling was lights out: we seesawed on whether we could make in by noon, but kept our heads down. when we were just over 1 k out, we had 3-4 min and I suddenly remembered my watch was ahead of official race time exactly 3 min, game still on. we came in officially 4 min 14 sec over time, thus a 4 pt penalty.
Kevin out easily paced me during the trek, and a tuff mudder-chucker; xray showed a fracture.

adventure race race (s-epic) 13:30:00 [3]

shanandoah epic ar. good times. started out with a pseudo prologue, involving four trekking points nearby the there was no on the clock advantage race-wise, but as soon as you finished your prologue which could start as early as 6:30, you will receive your race maps for planning. had to be on the bus by 10 o'clock. RD said it was 1 hour distance, we took about 40 minutes. The time advantage was you got your maps as soon as you finish your prologue.
At the start, was prologue 2.0. One member from the team had to do a run around, getting a band and then you could start down the race course. Kevin was the runner and he put us in a great position with the top five to seven Runners coming all coming within 5-8 seconds of each other. Our plan was to let the race come to us, and minimize mistakes. We hit it off first on some biking and we're soon off the bike pushing our bikes up the trail. For the first hour we were pretty much with a lead pack and then it slowly dwindled off till just a few teams. Soon we found ourselves in second or third place, and then by ourselves, only the solo Jesse was in front. We did not chase him as we wanted to stick to the plan. we bumbled through, it was rainy and misty nearly all day until late evening, when temps.got colder as well. bike legs had lots of bike pushing up and down over slippery rocks. The points were fairly straight forward. We reached the trekking section somewhere just before 11 p.m. and knew it was roughly a two-hour run. This section was fairly clean for us except for one five minute bobble where we over ran a shallow reentrant.
