WOC Relay leg 2
Charlotte came in with a group 10-16th places. I knew I was quicker than most of the girls I set off with so kept it as clean as I could with the aim of getting away. Did this and had a gap coming out of the first loop. Then a lot of dead running through spectator and around the tracks to 6. Careful going into the control after all that running, but then exit direction not so good to 7 and I was quite unsure of which part of the hill I was crossing. I did check my direction better once I was on the top so I knew I was at least parallel to the pink line but struggled to pick up any features until after the marsh, so pretty hesitant here. Better through the rest of that big loop and passed Poland. Mostly running on the way back again, taking the track route to 13. Happy to have done a good job of catching places and sent Cat out in 9th. Exciting to watch her reel in Denmark on last leg but it wasn’t quite to be. Still good to finish 9th overall.
Even better news now though is that we’re back in Division 1 which means we can have three girls (rather than two as in Division 2) racing long distance in WOC 2021 in Czech, yay :D

So I found this not to be quite what I was expecting - had thought it would be more like the test race. The first bit of forest was nice and the small loop 5-8 but other than that it mostly seemed to be really tough going and scrappy, or super quick golf course. I didn’t really mind and it probably worked to my advantage. Disappointed to have made a lot of different mistakes but at least I listened to the alarm bells and sorted myself out reasonably quickly each time.

One thing I noticed more than I have done in the past was the cameras following me. With an earlier start I was setting new fastest splits (I think, at least in lead through spectator and finish) so I had the gopro guys following me in the forest. For once I had to take some extra time to get over the ‘I’m on tv, gotta navigate’ thoughts and actually navigate instead.

Anyway pretty average performance (probably more on the ”poor performance” end) so I was surprised with the result. In all honesty I was expecting a big flop this year - I had been struggling in the few trainings I had done in Norway and didn’t have much confidence at all going into this. So with low expectations of myself it was nice to get it done with and finish roughly equal with last year. Easy to see how to improve from here too.

The main source of excitement for me this year was actually from those of you who follow the races. So a massive thanks to all of our supporters, especially to the Welsh and Bristol juniors cheering in the arena!

Middle quali, Knatterudfjellet (Heat 1)
Pheeeeeew. Relieved to have qualified in 10th. This was the thing I was most scared of this week so very glad to have it done with and finish on the right side of qualifying.
I took it very steady and was trying to be careful with direction. However I was also trying to avoid crags (having gotten stuck on some major ones in the test races). In trying to avoid crags, I was actually going so far off the line, more than I needed to, and not getting back on it so some bigger time losses at 3, 8 and maybe 10. Otherwise okay I think and picked up the pace a little towards the end. Apart from the fear aspect I did enjoy :)
