Chatty night run west of Hilton Falls with Funderstorm and Bugsinteeth. We parked at Currie Tract and carried some maps but they only seemed to correspond with reality once in awhile. Fortunately, I'd brought a compass that proved very useful in guessing which direction to turn at each junction. We did two loops, which allowed Funderstorm to get a fresh battery for her fading light.

Then we pigged out at the Mohawk Chophouse - yum! Great to catch up and hang out. Simpy, we missed ya.

And people think adventure racing is a weird pastime!

A rare study has been published on extreme ultrarunning - a 4,487 km race from southern Italy to northern Norway over a 2-month period with no rest days.

The good news: Although joint cartilage degraded at first, it began to regenerate after awhile. There was surprisingly little damage to the body. The scientists concluded that the human foot is meant for running.

The bad news: Brain volume decreased! Runners lost an average of 6.1% of their grey matter by the end of the race. It was back to normal after 8 months. (Not very helpful since most of us foolishly register for our next race long before our brains start working again!)

An inspired running route around western Caledon, designed by Browner and tweaked a little with my local knowledge to avoid a bit of road. Our group was rounded out by Browner's friend Yumi, a friendly, fit road marathon runner who is getting more interested in trail running. She was a *really* good sport as she ran outside her comfort zone in road shoes (Hokas, no less).

We did a little road, a lot of trail, a bit of unintentional bushwhacking (my fault), some mud, some ice and a bunch of hills including the gruelling Devil's Pulpit climb 2.5 hours into the run. I could see that Browner's hill training at Kelso has been paying off!

Lunch at the Inglewood General Store was soooo yummy. Next time we need to find a route that finishes at Spirit Tree Cidery so we can enjoy their wood-fired oven pizza and a flight of ciders.

Happy Birthday, 'Bent!

I had to sneak over to Gourmandissimo to get chocolate truffle cake and deliver it to BGY's house for the birthday feast, so I didn't join 'Bent's group run. I went for a run around Glen Haffy afterward. Snow would be nicer but I love running in the cold. I listened to Randy and Kyle's podcast about ARWC, which was enlightening.

Strength & Mobility (Ski Bounding) 20:00 [3]
slept:7.0 shoes: Salomon S-Lab XT 5 Softground

A little outdoor running, jumping and ski bounding in the dark - some cardio mixed with strength.

I'd planned to go out longer but just as I was leaving, I got an agitated phone call from 'Bent. As he started to run home from work along Hwy 50, AdventureDog was startled by a revving truck, yanked his head backwards out of his collar and ran away. 'Bent was pretty sure he saw ADog take the underpass beneath the highway, which is their usual route home. From there, it is more than 4 km to our place with a number of choices to make in the trail network, as well as a golf course and two more roads to cross. AdventureDog had never done it alone, certainly not in the dark. Yikes.

By the time he phoned me, 'Bent had already gone more than 1 km along the commute route while calling AdventureDog's name. (Which is "Logan" when he isn't on Attackpoint.) No sign of him.

I was dressed to go out training so I pulled on some extra layers and grabbed a whistle. I couldn't go too far from the house in case the poor pooch somehow made it here but he would hear my whistle if he was nearby. 'Bent and I have been through this kind of thing a few times with our four dogs over the years and we've had occasional differences of opinion regarding appropriate collar tightness. My head was spinning. I was thinking that I would really miss him - and the dog too. ;)

Luckily, 'Bent found ADog about 2 km away from where he had disappeared into the darkness without a collar. He had crossed a busy highway (using an underpass), navigated from a trail network up a steep hill onto a golf course, crossed another road and located the small opening in the fence to get into Palgrave Forest & Wildlife Area where he made the correct turns on the trails to get himself almost to Duffy's Lane before 'Bent finally caught up. Phew!!!! Our little boy is paying more attention than we think - thank goodness.
