Running warm up/down 11:02 [2] 1.53 km (7:13 / km)

Up. Decided to abandon the thermal by the start (it's still there oops) and ran with my jacket in a bum bag. Lovely weather really :)

Orienteering race 1:23:01 [4] 15.52 km (5:21 / km)

Many things went wrong today. Many. Missed several controls by 20ish seconds just by not seeing the feature when I had my head up and not being quite accurate enough with the compass. Missed #1, #5 and #15 for similar reasons but lost nearer a minute. Wasn't running fast enough but I expected that. And now to the stuff I couldn't control. My dibber is broken (probably). At about 10 controls the box didn't beep for a good 5 seconds while holding it in, it was like I was waking them up but clearly wasn't. And then at 3 of the controls it took much longer and having held it in for maybe 10 seconds at 2 of them them and probably as much as 20 at the third I had to pin punch. Except the third didn't have a pin punch so I was stood at the flag for a good minute, unsure of what to do before deciding the only thing I could do was carry on. Really weird and very frustrating but thankfully I was reinstated but still I reckon 2 minutes lost over all the slow punches. Also broke my £60 compass that I've had less than a year, great. Anyway again another disappointing result that I'll analyze the technical stuff more later. The last sprint selection in Whitby is looking like an even more important race for me now aha, who'd have thought it...

Running warm up/down 3:54 [2] 0.72 km (5:25 / km)

Up.

Orienteering race 33:35 [4] 4.82 km (6:58 / km)

Middle. Dissapointing. Physically felt pretty good. Caught J Leitch at 4 and probably got distracted by him. Missed 7 stupidly. Then decided to go to 10 before 9. Both stupid, stupid things to do looking back on it but for the rest felt like I was going pretty well. Could have been on for about 28 without those two controls but that's irrelevant. Bad result really but not off horrifically early tomorrow #WeGoAgain

Running warm up/down 8:36 [2] 1.36 km (6:19 / km)

Down back to the start and back up the great big hill so I could pick my jacket up.

Event: JK 2016

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2] 2.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Asics trainers

Up. Didn't do too much, few hard sprints and a lot of stretching. Felt like I was getting a stitch that thankfully disappeared in the start boxes somewhere.

Orienteering race 15:45 [5] 4.0 km (3:56 / km)
shoes: Asics trainers

JK Day 1 - Sprint - Leeds University
Plenty of geeking had gone into this so I was pretty confident with all the levels and underpasses so felt pretty confident. Also by looking around the arena we'd worked out where #1 was and #10, #11 and #12 around spectator. We'd also worked out that this was where the map turnover occurred. On the way to #1 I'd worked out where #2 was having seen the circle and checked the descriptions so then I'd pretty much got the route for it sorted leaving #1, allowing me to look ahead and try to spot some tricky legs coming up which there didn't seem too many of. Fine till #4 where there was a slight hesitation checking descriptions to confirm it was up the steps. #5 I think I lost 4 seconds by coming back down the stairs and under looking at Tim's split who went through #12. Possibly should have planned ahead better coming into #4 but I'd just seen Barber going under so decided to follow. Also I was more worried about the exact location of #4 than my route out to #5. Picked the level #7 was on well, using the pop-out again. #10 I just picked a route north out of #9 on what I thought was a 50/50 but I've lost 3/4 seconds on distance. Kept navigationaly ahead of myself well through until #14. Can't remember why but on #14 I pretty much stopped dead on the steps to the right. I think I possibly lost contact with where I was and hesitated losing me 3/4 seconds. #16 I again did the same thing next to the pop-out again losing 3/4 seconds. #19 I've lost 5 seconds on running speed and at the end of the leg I ran all the way around a green patch when it would have been better to run past and hop a fence. #20 3/4 seconds lost coming north out of #19 again. So overall nothing more than 5 seconds lost on a leg and maybe a total of 15 seconds lost which I can't complain about. This is possibly my best result ever at a major event and an amazing way to start the weekend off! The map geeking was so important especially on this area as the levels would have been very confusing without it. Things I did well was planning ahead and decisiveness in picking routes. Things to possibly improve on would be keeping slightly better contact and try and avoid the hesitations.
