RockstAR with Hammer.
Forecast was for high in the 30s and humidex in the 40s. Hottest ever.
I still wasn’t feeling 100%, so we agreed to dial back the pace and break as needed.

We had debated biking on roads to the South for some high value controls, but Hammer agreed with Bash’s plan to bikewhack into the ATV trails to the East and around the North for the big points there.

Started with a paddle prologue again. It was even hot on the paddle!

The bikewhack was absolutely steaming, and I called a break after. The ATV trails were relentlessly tough, and the deerflies were the worst I’ve ever seen in spots. Hard to ride a tricky line on a muddy downhill with one in your ear and another in your mouth.

We made a point of detouring to every body of water we could see, from swimming in the lake by the portage to sitting in puddles in creeks or splashing water from bogs if they weren’t too nasty. The farthest NW control was at a dam, and we spent a good 5 min lounging in the river, slugging water from my filter flask.
Hammer was strong, but I was lagging behind, and doing worse than usual on the atv mud pits.
Mercifully we had some road riding and met Dee and Bash who were doing well. We had to boogie back to make the 6pm check-in cutoff, including the nasty ride/hike/carry around the East side of Bark Lake. We had to skip a 70 pointer and the SUP we’d planned.

I was pretty cooked by the time we got back to the hub, but after a coke and a rest while Hammer did the diving control I felt a bit better. We just did the closer task-based controls and moseyed in 15 min early.

It turns out we were 8th overall and 4th in our category, and all but 1 team ahead of us had gone South.
The Tarnos crushed the co-ed, but sadly Bash and Dee missed the 6pm cut-off.

Hammer was strong (and patient) throughout despite the heat, and I was just working to keep up this time, but we had a fun day out rather than killing ourselves for a top result.
