Orienteering race 1:37:51 [3] 5.2 km (18:49 / km)

I'm back! First course I've done since last June due to injuries. Walked the Green course at Tarrywile, with some jogging down hill or on the level (not much). Trying hard to be smart, stick to the map, go around peaks to minimize climbs, being real careful on traversing scree and other ankle twisters. Nailed most, not terribly far off on others. Crowded in the middle of the course, so I was aided a bit in that area. Did start my FR but often forgot to push LAP at each control. The LAP button failed after a half hour, so punt. Forgot to stop the FR at finish until a bunch of minutes later. Will have to retrain on the software to render my route on a map. Hope to post later.

No groin or hip problems whatsoever! Perhaps enforced no-activity during last three weeks whilst aboard ship and planes (and airports) on expedition to South Georgia Island let things relax and knit properly. The big climbs at Tarrywile was a good test. All smiles.

Nellie passed me on way to 3. He was still around at the Finish when I came in and I asked how's he's been recovering. He seemed pleased to be back on track - literally. We shared notes on hip tightness and the cascading of compensating muscles.

map: On way to 1 tried to mentally calibrate distance on the ground with distance on the map. Went slow to test legs and to nail the first control for confidence gaining. That worked. Nellie passed me on climb up to 2. To 3 used clearing and road to speed up and to use creek/marsh for reference but climbed too far right when eying hilltop. Quick recovery to left. Circled left around hill to nail 4. Climb to 5 took a lot of fuel. 6 and 7 were straightforward. Traverse to 7 was ugly across wet and leafed scree, wish I had descended early to trail. Turning to 8, did not see trail on map along east side of lake and thought the lake side might be another rough and rocky traverse, so I opted to mindlessly follow trail eastward even though it meant going over the summit. The rest was all downhill and straight away.
