Note

Took way too long to extract Susan from the ward at JD Hospital today. The resident dictated discharge notes early in the morning but did not put STAT (hospitaleze for ASAP) on it. Waiting and waiting to get outta there. At 2 pm nurse said: glitch. The dictation transcription (which is done probably in Bang-the-Dish or some other remote place) hadn't been done yet, so we can't leave. Finally came through at 3 pm. Now wait for the wheelchair union to send someone by to transport to the front entrance. Then wait for the valet parking to provide our car (actually they did a fine job - I like the valet parking there).

Into McLean at last where the noise level is negligible and the prospect of getting some sleep is high. The JD hospital ward was noisier than the cafeteria and the service was slower!

But part the McLean staff was slow to notice Susan's arrival after she was brought into her room (same room, coincidentally, as she had 2 years ago when rehab'ing her other knee). So we grabbed a walker, ignored the instruction to stay put, and walked up to the nurses' station. That did the trick - attention was then immediate.

And the patient is doing very well.
9 AM

Hiking 1:03:02 [3] 4.51 km (13:59 / km)

Another glorious day for a hike. In Town Forest/Ethel Walker Woods. Nice scene as ascended Bushy Hill (the observatory at EW) while the sun was still somewhat low. Paused for 10 minutes or so to take snapshots.

Hiking 16:43 [3] 1.46 km (11:27 / km)

Not much time today so did a walk around nearby subdivision.
2 PM

Hiking 23:34 [3] 2.26 km (10:26 / km)

On way home from visiting at hospital, walked a lap around Fisher Meadows. Another great weather day, need to take advantage of this before the season gets nasty.

Note

Corn Maze.

Let's hope PG doesn't see this. He probably has enough ideas already.

Note

Long day at UConn while Susan had new right knee installed. Doc was very pleased, post-op nurse was amazed at favorable toe-ankle-leg responses, roommate in recovery ward seems respectfully quiet (unlike the series of 3 mentally distressed patients when Susan was in that ward two years ago for her left knee installation). So all is good.

Note

The results posted for Saturday's O at Westmoreland shows Charlie was the only contestant. And he led the whole way, too. :)

I suppose the event administrators are still having computer problems that were evident when I downloaded. They deserve better in view of their having set fine courses and having handled such a large crowd on the beginner courses.

3 PM

Hiking 36:51 [3] 3.31 km (11:08 / km)

Hike around Simsbury WMA on warm, clear, windless day with great foliage seen on the mountain.

Orienteering 1:35:50 [3] 5.96 km (16:05 / km)

Brown course at Westmoreland Sanctuary in Mount Kisco. Put aside Control 1 and it was a great day. Nice open woods, running pretty well for a greater portion of a course than I normal run, good contact with map except 4 where I explored one wall too early. Went up and over on 9 to 10 and survived reasonably well, but I wonder if my time would have been as good going around the south side of the hill. Failed to notice trail north of my traverse 10 to 11 that would have probably cut some time off--on the map it was partial covered up by the course line. Interviewed by course setter Gregory Balter afterwards who was inquiring whether some climbs were too dangerous for typical Brown-coursers (polite way of saying "old folks"?). I didn't think so. Told him I hope he'll use the venue again soon--I thought the woods were fabulous to be in.

BTW, I grew up in the '50s on a dirt road the town didn't even show on its official map about 4 miles to the east and used to roam alone as a 5-to-12 year old extensively in the undeveloped woods without a map and never worried I would find my way back home. Now the terrain is covered with gazillion-dollar residential estates that probably have state-of-the-art intrusion detectors and beefy turtle-necked thugs to eliminate me with extreme prejudice.

Pleased I could run as much as I did and that the hip/groin was not an issue. Much better endurance than in prior years.

Nice ride to site and home with Rhonda and Charlie, sharing stories of fabulous meals while in Italy earlier this month.

My route. The Start and Finish are a bit messed up due to early (start) and late (finish) mal-attention to button pushing on the iPhone.
