Orienteering race 1:29:44 [3] 6.03 km (14:53 / km) +263m 12:13 / km
shoes: Icebugs

Excellent weather for the Hurd event: blue sky, 60F, windy but not a factor in the woods. Excellent spotting of the controls on the map by Walk.

I was determined today to stay in contact with the map, count more often especially when no really good catching feature was evident, select good attack points and waypoints, and limit running to open ground or trails on level or downhill so I wouldn't run out of gas. It all worked.

I was never particularly lost though I would occasionally be left or right by 10-20 meters. I was too far right on 2, somehow confused by my sightings of the stonewalls -- not sure why. On 6 I had intended to go north to the wide trail before turning west, but ended up going straight west. Good move, because it let me look for and go close to the big cliffs as a confident waypoint in otherwise long trek across rather featureless terrain. Figured going straight for 7 risked drifting off azimuth and opted to use the trail to find the cliffs south of the bag. Had to get through a few meters of laurel but the plan was perfect. Good visibility of the big cliff on the right gave assurance on the way to 8. 9 was a pure contour and count segment. On 11 using the trail at the south end of the swamp eased the climb and pointed right to the mark. Nice contours toward 12, though I went a bit too high on the last part.

My route.

Pretty good pace for me on a course with climb, considering I have not been working out often in recent months while tending to home care duties. This was a great day off.
