Orienteering race 1:26:56 [3] 4.45 km (19:32 / km) +154m 16:39 / km
shoes: Icebugs

Brown course at Mt Lakes in North Salem, offered in conjunction with the DIY BG on a BYOM basis due to the Pandemic.

I was concerned all summer long that my orienteering days might be over since I have been limping with right hip pain and an X-ray recently showed that the ball joint is bone-on-bone. I hadn't been moving afoot for exercise outside since January other than to escort Susan for her careful walks around various empty parking lots. Unbearable heat and humidity have been a deterrent as well.

But the weather and venue looked perfect for testing whether I can still get around a 3.4km woodsy trek and enjoy it.

Success on both counts! My goals for the effort were to (1) walk only, (2) stay in contact with the map, (3) achieve an energy-and-time efficient route, and (4) be ready to quit if the body said "that's enough".

The park was beautiful, the weather excellent, the silence and solitude rewarding. I had a great time.

My route.

My compass consistently took me too far right on 1, 2, 6 and 7, but not terribly so. 7 was my only frustrating walk-about to find the control as I lost concentration after coming over the shoulder of the knoll to its n.w. The rest were spikes. Nice woods, good mapping of scratchy areas. This seems like the easiest Brown I have encountered; just as well, given that this was a test after long layoff.

Not much hip pain or limping until near the end. And less soreness in the evening than usual. My resort to periodic consumption of my favored pain killer (1 Tylenol, 2 Advil: said by Mayo clinic to be more effective than oxycodin and certainly safer) may be helping.

Encouraging.
