Note
After being injured since November last year apart from a 6-7 week spell earlier in the year I thought it was now about time to get running again.
I was on my medical elective in Borneo in the capital of Eest Malaysian Borneo, Kota Kinabalu..
Not seen anybody running since I arrived in south east Asia. However on this day in July when I headed out late morning, the temperature must have been about 35 degrees and I could see this white guys legs turning over about 20m ahead of me. I thought I should put in a surge and maybe we could run together. He seemed like a fairly good runner and we were running around 7.30 pace.
We were out of the city now running through the B roads through the forest. I asked the guy if he rums for a club. 'Hmm a bit , on and off' he said. It was when we were talking times and PBs he revealed that he was Dave Clarke, 3 time National XC champion in the 80s, 9th in the World Cross and ex-GB team manager. I really coundn't believe the coincidence and we ran together for a week or so around the outskirts of the city running 30 min loops most days as in the heat we could not take much more. He told me many amazing stories about his battles at the National withMike Mcleod and others, of his racing experiences with Coe, Moorcroft etc. He was a really inspirational guy and on most days still left me for dead on the hills.
