28 Days injured

So after the tightness that I felt on Monday evening, I decided to give a run another go today.

Prior to going out the door and since Monday I have had absolutely no pain on walking, single leg calf raises or multiple leg hops. I've waked over 10,000 steps between the wards at work, ran up and down stairs and to cardiac arrests - no pain!

Today I was fine for around 10-12 minutes then I could start to feel the tightness building up. At around 17 minutes it was so much that it stopped me from running, as if my calf had been injected with cement. Then walking back and down to the coffee shop I had some pain on walking. Over the last few hours this has gone and again I have no pain on any of these tests but can't run for a prolonged period of time before my calf tightens up. There is absolutely no way that when it tightens up in such a way and I feel this 'pressure' that I could continue running.

I'm not feeling to down and depressed though, I've been through that stage. I'm actually quite enjoying the turbo, it gives my lots of time to dream about running sub 4 this summer.

So I'm certainly no sports doctor and admit I have absolutely no idea as to the cause of this injury.

Andrew Baddeley published a nice article on englandathletics yesterday, he said regarding injury...' But more importantly I lost my absolute favourite thing about running, the thing that gives me energy, purpose, satisfaction, pleasure and motivation – I lost the time spent with other runners, with my training partners and coach. I lost the support that comes from talking on runs, talking about the banalities of everyday life, but also talking about how today was a great day, or more importantly how today seemed like a pretty bad day.'

Hour on the turbo with 26 minutes at threshold heart rate. A good workout with some nineties club classics.

A sore bum by the end of this session. No pain in calf at all when cycling.

Decided to have a day off running today given the worrying signs towards the end of yesterdays run. I will try a flat 4 mile run tomorrow and see how I go.

Running 21:50 [3] 2.98 mi (7:20 / mi)

Tried a slightly longer continuous run. Three miles.

Felt no problems for the first two miles which were flat and then downhill. However on coming up Hunters Bar I could feel some 'pressure' building up in the calf. It was mild and I didn't need to stop. I'll see how it is tomorrow.

Running 15:22 [3] 2.02 mi (7:36 / mi)

This morning I was slightly nervous that yesterday was a fluke but it turned out ok.

Jogged two miles down to the station and then another 1.5 from the station to work. No pain again and no response from the calf during the day at work.

After working lots of hours last week (84) I now have some annual leave and easier weeks coming up so a good chance to steadily build it up. I'm unsure just how steadily to do it. However I need to look at my goals, the main one for me is to somehow run sub 4 so I have plenty of time on my hands.
