More HOWC climbs: Dedicated to the Canadian pilot crew. Early on in the HOWC, a group of Canadian military pilots on loan to the USAF/National Guard started regularly showing up on the Hills of the West Coast rides. All were good riders, and I became friends with them on and off the bike. Before tricky descents, I always got the HOWC riders together and explained sections requiring extra careful riding. Descending Zoo hill, there is an off camber, decreasing radius left turn. Despite my explanation on a summer ride in 2005, Paul, one of the Canadians, fell off at this corner and separated his shoulder. I never took the HOWC down Zoo hill again. In fact, I never rode down Zoo hill again, period...until today. I could have picked a better day, as there was a lot of sand and a few remaining patches of snow, but curiosity got the better of me. Lots of new houses, but the road is the same as I remember it in 2005, i.e., not that great.
