Grand Ridge/Duthie/High Point/P Point Back on board! Man, is it great to have the MTB back. What a week for riding!

Covington/Black Diamond One of those days. Of near perfection, that is, with lots of sun and comfortable temps of 55-60 degrees, as well as very light traffic. Well, except for the afternoon school bus caravans. And then there were the brisk foothills winds, which I seemed to be riding into 75% of the time. But that is nitpicking!

Views Cruise with a Si Surprise. My plan was to go hard on a couple of local climbs, but I wasn't mentally or physically psyched for that. So instead I rode up a few view hills. I was surprised to see Mt. Si from a new angle.

Grand Ridge/Duthie From Nirvana to Despair. Mountain bikes require a lot of expensive maintenance. One day a bike can feel old and decrepit, but after a new fork, a rebuilt shock, and new suspension pivots, all feels brand new again! That is until the shock blows out on the second ride since my bike was put back together:(

Grand Ridge/Duthie Rust-proofing. It's been 12 days since I rode MTB. To ride MTB well requires developing quite a few skills that can rust quickly. Since I have ridden, there has been some erosion of the trails from the rains, and it was a little sloppy out there.

Local climbs If not quantity, then why not quality? I'd like to get out for a long ride, but I'm not interested in getting caught in the MON during one of the big wind and rain storms we have had lately. I timed it right today, riding the A bike after the roads dried and before the next storm. After getting stopped by a Issaquah police officer, we shook hands at the end of a nice idea and story sharing 20 minute discussion. New KOM and lowered an existing one

Hills of the West coast no show, but go anyway. The weather/forecast bark was worse than the bite, but it must have worried a few people. At the start, there were rain clouds sitting on the tops of Squak and Tiger, but I was soon in the sun on my way to Redmond. It rained a little in the middle of the ride when I was as far from home as possible, but the weather wasn't bad overall. I'd rather have wet roads/rain than the dry/cold/black ice we have had several times this winter. It's been a long time since I have led a HOWC. I'll have to try again with more reliable weather.

Pre-rain local climbs? Vacillation cost me. I thought I might get my fourth dry road ride of the week done before the rain started. I spent too much time deciding to ride, and then whether to ride the A bike or the B bike. The Tarmac felt its first rain drops, but I got home before I messed it up very much or got myself dirty. I've been down 212th off ELSamm a million times, but went up it for the first time today. I've avoided doing the climb because of the lack of shoulder and blind curves, but it wasn't bad at all with light traffic. Two new KOM's

Just like the "gentle trade winds" of Maui. But not quite. Today's 25+ mph winds were about half as strong as I experienced on my last trip to Maui. Today's wind was also gusty and swirling, as opposed to the unidirectional constant onslaught of the trade winds. But I'm not complaining, just commenting. No complaints are possible when it's sunny, 50 degrees or above, and I am on my Tarmac. KOM on Gilman North

Local road climbs during a mountain bike hiatus. If the weather were to stay like on my ride today, I wouldn't miss my MTB riding at all. I got back from my ride before the latest batch of nastiness descended. I was hoping for no overlap of my current mountain bike suspension being overhauled by the Specialized US Service Center under warranty, and my new World Cup mountain bike being built up. It almost worked out perfectly, but we're waiting for the new bike's crankset to show up, and my shock didn't quite hold out long enough:( It's been a long, long time since I did the plateau climbs I did today.

Grand Ridge Houston we have a problem. My rear shock is now toast and has to be sent to Specialized. I bailed and took the road home from the top of the Highlands. It was raining hard and the wind was so strong that it was coming at me sideways like pins and needles. I will be without a MTB until my new bike is built.

Grand Ridge/Duthie MTB Five and 0. Today was my fifth dry dirt MTB ride day in a row. If I only had a road bike, it would have been zero rides this week of record breaking cold temps. Just like during our previous cold snaps of the winter, I know several people who hit the icy pavement,

GR/D. My red "vintage" Team HPC Windstopper jacket came in handy today. Rarely do I need something this bomber for a MTB ride. There is no ice on the trails because the cold has sucked the moisture into the "tundra." Gotta watch for frosty patches. I deployed my backup toe warmers in my gloves to relieve seriously cold index fingers!
