MTB 2:23:00 [3] 21.0 mi (8.8 mph) +2700ft
weight:150.2lbs

Equal but different MTB fun at GR/D. I enjoy the adventure of riding in challenging weather conditions (almost) as much as flying down the trails in the summer. I saw a few other riders and runners who must feel the same way that I do. The trails were better than I expected, considering the 3.75" of rain we had at the house the during the previous 24 hours. I had to carry the bike eight times over downed trees. Speed sensor issues=low miles/AS

Grand Ridge/Duthie MTB Mud, but not muddy...yet. This weekend should take care of the muddy part. The trails were actually in pretty good shape today. No way is it go fast time, as the light is flat, and the fallen leaves hide hazards and make it tough to see the cornering lines.

Pre-rain backyard climbing: Highlands/Squak 2x.It's really nice to roll out of the garage and knock out 3k of climbing in 21 miles. I guess I should have planned on a longer ride because it looks like it's going to be nice all afternoon. Hindsight is always 20-20. Climbs at Z3/Z4. Picked up a nice new KOM.

A rainy day today, and that made it easy to take a block of rest days. That, and the fact that my MTB is in the shop.

Salmon Hatchery/Rainier Bike Path/Sycamore. Where was the morning heavy rain and high wind? I would have ridden MTB if I didn't have to install a new chain, cassette, and small chainring.

Tommy can you see (me)? GR/D. The difference in how flat the light was when going in and out of the sunlight from just two days ago was amazing. The sun is now at a very low angle, even mid-day. It will be better on cloudy days, but who is wishing for those. The trails themselves are in good shape, although the falling leaves are contributing to the difficulty in seeing the conditions one is riding through and over. It's harder to see your line, as well as obstacles. I found myself taking new lines through familiar sections, rolling over rocks and bouncing off of tree roots that I had never even noticed before.

The gut reaction of course, is to slow down, but slowing down can make one tentative, and that breeds a loss of confidence. From there it can be a spiral down, and it's not good. I tried to dial in the focus and look for different visual cues, which seemed to help.

Of course, I have this problem every fall. I just happen to be going a lot faster overall this year as my skill level has dramatically improved. Clearly, I am done going fast for the year, and I will just try and "focus" on not "overdriving my headlights."

Perhaps this difficulty in seeing in flat light is just another one of those things that gradually gets worse as you get older. Maybe the young guys don't even notice it!

The real solution is going to be riding my road bike on beautiful sunny days before they are gone, because once winter hits, I will spend plenty of time on my MTB.

GR/Duthie 2x/pavement home. I may not be able to go lower at Duthie this year. the light has gotten just flat enough that it is getting harder to see when going in and out of the sun in the trees. 2nd overall Ton of fun at Duthie

Squak Mountain brisk hike. Two straight DOB's means I will be riding my bike(s) every day starting tomorrow until I wear myself out, or crappy weather gives me an excuse for another DOB. I love having a Squak TH .25m from home.

Apocalypse Not GR/D. Despite weather forecasters calling for what sounded like impending doom, I rode in the sunshine. While the dirt was perfect, the rocks were a bit slippery, especially the ones covered by the now falling leaves. Not a day for PR's, but it was a bonus day of riding.

GR/D/HP Kids are back in school. All summer it was great to see what appeared to me to be at least twice as many kids at Duthie as there were last summer. There were MTB classes and camps pretty much every day I was there. I wish I had a chance to spend my summers that way when I was a kid!
I also have to admit that it was pretty darn nice for Duthie to be deserted today and have it almost all to myself.

Witte/Moneysmith/Covington/196th/Jones/89th/NWay. Gotta enjoy perfection while we have it: deep blue skies, light wind, and deserted roads. Only negative was a lot more broken glass than normal, especially out in the MON, almost like it was the 4th of July, and not Labor Day weekend. Not only did my new tubeless tires at 80psi deliver a magic carpet ride, the sealant gave me some peace of mind that I wouldn't have to interrupt the flow of the ride to fix a flat. My only stop was for a cold bottle of Coke from Mexico. Loving the new bike!
