MTB 3:16:00 [3] 32.2 mi (9.9 mph) +3638ft
shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle "Leash aggressive"...That was the woman's description of her dog. Well, that's a nice euphemism for out of control, untrained dogs and a (sic) explanation as to why you removed the leashes, isn't it? Rather than the inconvenience of your dogs getting aggressive at the leash and tugging you around, why not just let them harass people and other dogs, and do whatever they want. I did the right thing by giving the group the heads-up about the three horses they would shortly encounter at Soaring Eagle, but perhaps I should have been more laissez fare like the dog owners.

MTB 3:17:00 [3] 32.5 mi (9.9 mph) +3629ft
shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle Built-in Braggadocio? I certainly hope not! "Your buddies are way ahead" was one of the friendly greetings from the group of a dozen hikers (in their 70's and 80's!) that I came upon during the climb up the south side of GR. My reply, "I'll catch them...whoever they are" was meant to be a bit funny. Sure enough, I caught and passed a group of five MTB riders about two minutes later, and went by another two going down the north side. I can't remember the last time I was passed riding MTB (definitely hasn't happened in 2015), so hopefully I was just subconsciously confident that I would likely see those riders, even though I wasn't riding hard.

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle What weekend rust? I felt like I didn't miss a beat from my last MTB ride on Thursday, after riding the road bike over the weekend.

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle 2X. I didn't ride hard today, but I rode very well. I had great balance and feel for the bike.

MTB 3:23:00 [3] 32.3 mi (9.5 mph) +3734ft
weight:150.6lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle Rare trail sighting. I came across a MTB rider not wearing a helmet, which you don't see too often. Usually it is the townies and bike bunnies who don't use helmets. Even more surprising is that the MTB rider otherwise looked like he knew what he was doing. I encountered five horses at SE, which is also pretty darn rare for a weekday.

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle/HPoint/PPoint Gotta think youth would be an advantage....When it comes to riding in low and/or mixed light conditions, young eyes work better. The dirt is in good shape after the weekend rain, but sunny conditions at this time of the year makes for difficult vision in the deep forest. Vision in low light declines with age, as does the ability to view contrast. Therefore, depth perception is affected, which is critical when riding MTB. Overcast conditions are the best for going fast under thick tree cover because the lighting is consistent. I suppose I could move somewhere without big, beautiful trees, but fat chance that is going to happen.

Medina/Kirkland/Redmond Soccer Mom Sayonara. Now that the kids are back in school, the Eastside roads are deserted during the middle of a weekday. Monday is always my favorite day to ride MTB, since the trails are empty, but I decided to wait a day and let the dirt dry out from yesterday's rain. The roads were so quiet today that it almost felt like a Sunday morning. Marymoor (soccer mom base camp) was like a ghost town.

Black Diamond-Covington-Jones-Newcastle-Cougar Some of my favorite HOWC roads. Back when I led the HOWC from DT Seattle, it would have taken 80+ miles to capture most, but not all, of the good roads I was on today.

MTB 3:22:00 [3] 32.5 mi (9.7 mph) +3619ft
ahr:121 max:155 shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle Endless MTB summer is over. We have had some significant rains during the last few weeks. Twenty four hours later on the trails it was hard to tell it had rained. Despite only .5" of rain yesterday, today there were many small puddles and light mud. It's no longer warm enough for the moisture to quickly evaporate. From now on, when it rains, it will be wet.

MTB 3:31:00 [3] 34.2 mi (9.7 mph) +3816ft
ahr:113 max:142 weight:150.8lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle/HPoint/PPoint. I was pretty tired and not focusing that well, but I still had fun. I took it easy and did another long ride.

MTB 3:40:00 [4] 37.4 mi (10.2 mph) +4105ft
ahr:119 max:150 weight:151.4lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle 2X Evidence of a nice weekend...The preferred line a lot of the time at Soaring Eagle was influenced by the need to avoid frequent horse poop piles. Wouldn't it be nice if they stopped to pick it up, like dog owners (mostly) do these days?

Lake Sammamish GP Cyclocross with Tracy. With a stop at Costco and FSM on the way home. After riding hard for ten of the last eleven days, a DOB was in order today. Walking 7.5m wasn't exactly the full rest day that I could have used.

Cycling 3:24:00 [2] 55.5 mi (16.3 mph) +2910ft

Medina/Kirkland/Bothell/Redmond Just a regular full time ahole? Or a Stravasshole on a mission? What other possible reason could there be for what I witnessed on the Burke Gilman? An idiot made some critical assumptions involving about six people including at least two walkers who looked to be well into their 70's. But I doubt he noticed the age of the one walker as he buzzed her elbow at 20+ mph in a ridiculous "squeeze play" move on the trail. My gut reaction was to turn around and ride him down to confront him. Of course, then there would have been two idiots flying down a trail crowded with people who looked to be the type who venture out to walk on the BG about once a year. I wish I would have thought to stop and apologize for the rider who did his part to tarnish cycling's image and scare the hell out of a group of people.

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle 2X Five foot stick. On GR, I came upon two women with a Golden Retriever. He was carrying a stick that was so long that he had clearance issues with the sides of the trail. For the dog, the stick meant contentment. I felt the same way about riding my MTB.

Carnation/Duvall/Marymoor Scary reminder in an instant. On Avondale, I made the tiniest assumption while doing everything "right." Lucky for me, I got away with it. After all these miles, another lesson learned.
