Cycling 2:43:00 [4] 37.1 mi (13.7 mph) +4390ft
ahr:132 max:164 weight:153lbs shoes: SW road 2013

Highlands 2.5-Cougar 2.0 It's tough to reach a plateau when you are starting out in Death Valley...But I am getting stronger. Quantitatively: faster times on the same climbs at the same or lower RPE. Qualitatively: I feel better on the bike. There is hope yet!

Cycling 3:49:00 [3] 60.6 mi (15.9 mph) +2996ft

Snoqualmie Valley OAB to Crescent Lake Rd. Yes, Seattle has a great symphony...We enjoyed some of the advantages of living in DT Seattle for ten years, but when it comes to cycling, hands-down it is a million times better to live in Issaquah. Today I appreciated riding in Snoqualmie Valley for what it is: very scenic riding on smooth and almost totally deserted roads. Normally it's easy riding there, but today's first 60m ride since my three month "layoff" kicked my ass a bit. The climb out of SV on the Issy-FC Rd. seemed more like the Tourmalet.

Cycling 3:17:00 [3] 53.0 mi (16.1 mph) +2978ft
ahr:118 max:140 weight:153.8lbs shoes: SW road 2013

Mercer Island CW-Medina-Kirkland-Redmond. Forgot to start timer: actual 53m/2978' climbing. Considering four straight DOB's, yesterday's climbing ride tired me out a lot more than I would have thought-not much energy today.

Cycling 2:49:00 [4] 39.1 mi (13.9 mph) +4403ft
ahr:127 max:160 shoes: SW road 2013

Highlands 2.5-Cougar 1.5-NGC Local climbs just a wee bit faster...Slowly but surely I am creeping up the hills a bit faster, as my form slowly creeps back.

Sycamore-Park Pointe-DT with Tracy. Day three in a row of off the bike rest. I wore myself out, and now I am regenerating, I hope.

ahr:114 max:141 weight:152.8lbs shoes: SW road 2013

Cedar Grove-Witte-240th-Soos-Sea Hill Playing catch-up with binge riding only works for awhile...I knew from the get-go that I was too tired to ride today, and that fitness-wise, a day off would have been more productive. I still enjoyed the hell out of the ride, so who cares? Last 7 days of my 3+ weeks on the comeback trail: 20 hours and 329 miles.

Cycling 3:18:00 [3] 53.1 mi (16.1 mph) +2935ft
ahr:121 max:144 weight:153.6lbs shoes: SW road 2013

Mercer Island-Medina-Kirkland-Redmond No flippin' way was I not going to ride with this weather. I felt a little better than yesterday, so I just kept riding on yet another spectacular day.

Tuesday Apr 19, 2016 #

Cycling 2:02:00 [3] 33.3 mi (16.4 mph) +1485ft
ahr:117 max:139 weight:153.4lbs shoes: SW road 2013

Cedar Grove-Renton-Lake WA east side Feel like I bought in at the bottom of the (cycling season) market...After nearly three months off of the bike, I've now been back riding for three weeks. Winter rains ended and summer temperatures arrived at the exact same time I started to ride. I've ridden 17 times over the last 21 days for a total of 675 miles, or 225 miles per week. I'm a bit tired at this point.

Cycling 3:25:00 [3] 54.2 mi (15.9 mph) +3100ft
weight:152.8lbs shoes: SW road 2013

Redmond-Kirkland-Medina-Mercer Island CCW I'm OK with skipping spring...As long as we go straight into summer instead of extending winter, who needs spring? Not that our "winters" are really winters. It was 91 degrees when I got back to Issaquah. Broke the heart of a team kit wearing guy on Mercer, and I take it as a sign of getting better on the bike.

Cycling 3:24:00 [3] 54.6 mi (16.1 mph) +2516ft
ahr:123 max:145 weight:153.2lbs shoes: SW road 2013

Medina-Kirkland-Bothell-Redmond-XXX Root Beer All Italian Car Show. By the time I showed up, all of the good stuff was gone. Normally there are quite a few Ferraris and Lambo's, but it was mostly Fiats, a few Lancia's and Alfa's, and several of the newer boring Maserati's. There was a nice red Testa Rossa.

Cycling 2:56:00 [3] 47.4 mi (16.2 mph) +2620ft
ahr:124 max:148 weight:152.8lbs shoes: SW road 2013

Redmond-Duvall-Carnation-Samm Plateau with an unplanned stop. My RD cable started to fray inside the shifter toward the end of my ride. I stopped by Pacific Bike and Ski on the plateau and they took care of me on a busy Saturday afternoon. It was great to see Paul and Mike, who I knew from Gerks, and Mason (current Gerks manager), who happened to be there as well.

Cycling 2:37:00 [3] 43.0 mi (16.4 mph) +2370ft
ahr:131 max:155 weight:152.8lbs shoes: SW road 2013

Mercer Island CW-May Valley Sensing my normality...Bit by bit, I am feeling more normal on the bike. Even though it's only been just over two weeks, my basic aerobic bike fitness has improved a lot.

Cycling 1:47:00 [4] 23.0 mi (12.9 mph) +2766ft
ahr:128 max:161 weight:153.2lbs shoes: SW road 2013

Highlands 2.5 I wish physiology behaved like motor skills...It took me about ten minutes to sharpen the motor skills of pedaling, bike handling, braking, etc, when I returned to riding two Wednesday's ago. It will take me a long time to regain fitness lost during my layoff. I am slow, but on the plus side, I felt a hell of a lot better than I did two weeks ago.

Cycling 3:33:00 [3] 56.4 mi (15.9 mph) +3340ft
weight:153lbs shoes: SW road 2013

Covington-Black Diamond-Ravensdale The climbs felt like Haleakala...Well, not really, but Tracy is in Maui, so I at least was thinking about Haleakala (and Tracy). She goes there with two friends every April, and in 2010 I went with her. I rode up Haleakala on a Wednesday, and liked it so much I did it again on Friday. Today is my longest ride of my "comeback" so far, and my sixth straight day of solid rides. Perhaps without 100mg of caffeine the whole ride would have felt like I was climbing up Haleakala.

Cycling 3:04:00 [3] 50.2 mi (16.4 mph) +2640ft
ahr:128 max:148 shoes: SW road 2013

South Lake WA-Mercer Island By no means fast, but it didn't feel horrible either...My climbing truly sucks, but at least my basic fitness seems to be improving quickly. I'm looking for any encouraging sign that I can get back to where I was by the end of the summer.

Cycling 2:22:00 [3] 39.1 mi (16.5 mph) +2300ft
ahr:129 max:151 weight:153.6lbs shoes: SW road 2013

Medina-Kirkland-Redmond The three good things (but not "positives") of detraining...#1 Elimination of chronic fatigue from years and years of a tremendous amount of riding, including almost 800 hours on the bike in 2015 #2 The feeling of getting a little stronger every time I ride (made possible by #1) #3 Rekindling and recharging my passion for road cycling (I can't ride MTB yet) Bonus #4 Rediscovering how much I enjoy hiking/trail running (although not nearly as much as cycling:(

Lake Samm loop. I rode to my PT appointment first.

Cycling 3:10:00 [3] 48.6 mi (15.3 mph) +3460ft
ahr:126 max:151 weight:153.6lbs shoes: SW road 2013

Snoqualmie Falls-North Bend-Scott's Dairy Freeze-Mt. Si. I knew this ride was kicking my ass, so I stopped for a large vanilla cone reward mid-ride. Very strong warm foothills winds made for tough going when heading east, but also resulted in perfect low 80's ice cream eating temps.

Wednesday Apr 6, 2016 #

Cycling 2:10:00 [4] 29.3 mi (13.5 mph) +3175ft
ahr:134 max:162 weight:152.6lbs shoes: SW road 2013

Crawling up a few local hills. Today was certainly better than last Wednesday's attempt at climbing, but I am slow.

Maple Valley-Black Diamond-Covington First drink of the year, and it wasn't even noon yet...Caffeine, not alcohol-I stopped for a "insurance" Coke so I wouldn't poop out on one of my favorite routes.

Saturday Apr 2, 2016 #

Cycling 2:35:00 [3] 44.1 mi (17.1 mph) +2460ft
ahr:134 max:152 shoes: SW road 2013

Mercer Island CCW-May Valley Early improvement...It's probably more psychological than physiological, but I felt noticeably stronger today, despite it being my fourth day in a row after three months of not riding.

Cycling 1:39:00 [2] 25.6 mi (15.5 mph) +640ft

Marymoor RT w/Tracy Never been a good rule follower...At my post-op this morning, I was told "no sports for six months," despite prior indication that cycling would be OK at twelve weeks when I start strength training. Twelve weeks is next Wed, so I jumped the gun by a week and rode the last three days. I understand "no sports" as relates to tennis, golf, baseball, etc, but I am not putting road cycling into that category. I did get them to bend and agree that cycling would be OK when I get full ROM, which I don't have yet. My plan is road cycling now, and riding MTB when I get full ROM and enough strength. I just can't fall off the bike!
