Grand Ridge-Water Tower Loop 3x "Hit it, dude" I caught three guys about half my age and as skinny as me at the start of a climb on the WT trail. They were all riding very fancy bikes and dressed in their best Saturday morning kit. When they didn't seem in any hurry to let me by, I asked politely. As I went by the third rider, he said, "Hit it, dude!" I guess he thought I must really be going for it if I was able to pass his group. In reality, I was at about RPE7. I did turn it up to an 8 after I got by, just in case they decided to "not let the old guy drop us."

Redmond-Kirkland-Medina-Cedar River: Chilling start to the last hot summer ride-somebody likely broke the law, but for certain one person died. There is a white ghost bike where the East Lake Sammamish Trail crosses NW Sammamish Rd, site of last Friday's fatal car-bike accident. I've ridden through this intersection literally hundreds of times. I've always thought of it as inconvenient (long light) and potentially hazardous, though not outright dangerous. I don't see how the collision could have occurred unless both parties were in the wrong, and very sadly a cyclist was killed. Todays' 88 degree high makes it back to back 80+ days. Given forecast highs in the 60's for the next week, I think it is likely that we won't be seeing 80 degrees again in 2017.

GR-Duthie-Soaring Eagle: Mild (but not Raging) River hangover. I felt yesterday's very hard ride at Raging River that had 5000' of climbing. The legs were tired, but I felt good enough to pay attention to what I was doing.

Raging River extra credit Time has expired and that ship has sailed-it's Fartlek season. I'm done and dusted for 2017 as far as going hard on the really long climbs of RR, Tiger and Olallie. Since July, I've headed to these areas about twice a week with the goal of climbing hard. I've picked up some KOM's and a bunch of Strava top tens. That's all well and good, but I have hit the wall. I tried to motivate myself today to PR the long climb and find the few seconds I need to bump Martin A down the leaderboard, but it didn't work. Oh well, he'll probably go faster anyway. On the plus side, if I don't lower my times any more in 2017, that will make it easier to PR in 2018. For extra credit, I did the last part of the big climb a second time, and that resulted in an almost uninterrupted 9.5 miles of downhill back to the TH. Fun!

Team HPC Meet the Team Ride. Tracy was with me to Eastgate. I then rode to Enatai to meet the team and guests. We were 30 strong so we broke into three groups. I spent time with each group as we rode through Medina, Kirkland, and on to Marymoor Park.

Raging River opportunity thwarted-oh well, stuff happens. I don't know how many more shots I will get at RR before winter conditions arrive, so my goal was to lower my PR's and move up the Top Ten board on the long climb segments. In the middle of Segment 6, or about half way up the 8.6 mile climb, I heard a loud crack and felt my saddle rotate back as the clamp on my newfangled fancy seatpost slipped. Cold fingers didn't help, and almost an hour later, I had the clamp adjusted and back together. As a consolation, I showed up in the Top Ten on a new segment someone has added. It's a long downhill on the return. DH is not really my thing, so it's nice that I must be riding well enough to figure in the mix.

Grand Ridge RT-Duthie It's been a really long time since I was cold, shivered, and got very dirty. Not quite since I was a kid, but still, a really long time. I dressed for chilly temps, damp or wet trails, and a chance of an isolated shower. Bu it rained hard, fortunately towards the end of my ride. Unfortunately, it started at top of GR, and I had to descend 1100' while getting drenched. I rode the winter bike, but without my winter fenders. Until the rain, the trails were damp with nice grip, but the hard rain muddied things up.

Sycamore-Park Pointe-Hatchery I have mixed emotions about the weather change but the Chinook are jumping for joy. After months and months of hot and dry weather, all it took to motivate the salmon to swim up Issaquah Creek was a little cool rain. They are so happy that they are jumping for joy...well, not exactly, but that's the way it looks!

Tiger Mountain Six-pack mountain bike version. Over the last six days, I have ridden at six different fantastic MTB areas: Grand Ridge-Duthie-Soaring Eagle from home, Raging River and Olallie in North Bend (15 minute drive), and Tiger today (15 minute drive, but I have also ridden down and back). It doesn't get much better than Issaquah from a cycling standpoint. This was my first time ever riding Tiger on a weekend. I passed 57 riders, including over 30 alone on the Master Link climbing trail. Despite all of the hikers and riders, it was never a problem, but I was happy that Master Link is a one-way uphill only trail. PS My GPS track resembles a bird sitting on its nest.

Olallie Great expectations are not always met. My goal was to PR the 6.5 mile full climb, but two big climbs this week at a really hard pace proved to be too much. Tuesday's fantastic ride and hard effort on over ten miles of climbing at Raging River should have been it for the week. I had some lower back ache, likely from doing too many core exercises yesterday. Note to self: don't do that. HR belt didn't work.

Grand Ridge-Duthie-Soaring Eagle Yesterday was all about riding hard, but today was just about riding. Actually, riding as easy as possible while riding 30m and some steep climbs. I hope to have good energy when I do another hard MTB ride on Friday. It was nice to get back on the "A" bike for the first time in almost two weeks.

Rip-Roaring Raging River Not bad for the B bike on a B+ day. MAC may not be as smooth as the Tomcat, or handle or descend quite as well, but I conclusively proved to myself today that it is every bit as fast when I want it to be. It just takes a bit more work and focus. I felt pretty good, but not fully fresh. I faded a bit on the Up the Flow climb, but I still rode it well.

Redmond-Kirkland-BV-Newcastle-May Valley Every day has some kind of first. Not that I needed to, but today was the first time I wore a long sleeve jersey in a very, very, long time. I guess I am just looking forward to fall. It was also the first time I rode on May Valley in a while, and that is always pleasant on a Sunday.

GR RT-Duthie-Soaring Eagle V-12 power also produces strength in numbers. I was shocked at how good I felt on my 3rd straight day of hard MTB riding. I wound up with 38m and almost 3500' of climbing, the most on the MTB so far in 2017. It was a quiet day on the trails, and I only caught 5 other riders. Estimated age and weight of the rider I caught at the very steepest part of the climb on GR back from Duthie: 25/135#. Number of water bottles filled at my late ride blackberry picking stop: 1. Number of 6# dogs who attacked me in Sycamore: 2. I feel fit, very healthy, and like I am firing on all 12 cylinders. Now if they would just bring back the V-12 to Formula 1!

GR-Duthie-Soaring Eagle It looks and feels more like an eclipse than the eclipse. Especially in the forest, where the light was flat and the only sign of the sun were occasional faint patches of soft orange. At least the patches were becoming more prevalent as I rode, so that is a good sign that the smoke is dissipating. There weren't too many people out, but I did see one hiker (but not the two dogs) wearing a mask. I wasn't surprised when I saw her get into a Volvo at the SE TH.

Grand Ridge Purple Haze but people are still walking their dogs and they are not dropping in the streets or turning into zombies. Purple haze all in my eyes. Don't know if it's day or night. Smoky air has never bothered me, at least physically. Nevertheless, as a concession I did a very short ride.

Redmond-Duval-Carnation-Tolt-Duthie Hill Calendar was the (only) deciding factor. I got a late start because I couldn't for the life of me decide whether to ride road or MTB. It came down to Sunday morning being the best time to ride road, as well as the trails being more crowded on weekends. In addition, how many more 85-90 degree weeks are we going to have during this very warm summer? I ride MTB all winter long in all kinds of weather, but summer is when I really love road riding.

Big Daddy Olallie Who is the toughest among the New Kids on the Block? IMHO, it's so close it's almost too hard to call. The full 9+ mile climb at Raging River is longer: https://www.strava.com/activities/1160204698/
But Olallie is steeper with a much, much harder finish. I'm giving the nod to Olallie as the most butch Big Daddy climb. It's fantastic to have two new areas that feature without a doubt the two longest and hardest climbs in King County, on road or dirt. I definitely felt Wednesday's hard ride at RR, but riding Olallie is so much fun I had to do it 1.5 times!
