MTB 3:15:00 [4] 33.4 mi (10.3 mph) +4067ft
ahr:121 max:148 shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Raging River-Snoq. Ridge-Preston-Home: I hope I wasn't ringing a dinner (or breakfast) bell. Cats are curious, but afraid of strange sounds. I am always hopeful that this is true of cougars, because they don't have any reason to be afraid of anything. There was just enough moisture for fresh animal tracks to be visible on the forest trails, and there were a lot of paw prints. I was happy to have the Timber Bell; not to alert other riders, because I didn't see a soul (or any critters). I turned around in the clearcut when I encountered lightly frozen trails that were thawing. I didn't want to cause ruts in the trail (or have to clean nasty peanut butter mud off of my bike). I took the long way home over SR and down to Fall City.

MTB 54:00 [2] 9.8 mi (10.9 mph) +971ft
ahr:102 max:123 weight:148.8lbs shoes: SW MTB 2012

EZPZ hike on a bike on my backyard trails. I wanted to be in the forest on a spectacular day, but I needed to save my energy for another hard ride tomorrow.

MTB 1:51:00 [4] 17.0 mi (9.2 mph) +3677ft
ahr:129 max:155 weight:148.4lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Olallie to the Unrideable Zone: Once again, my Garmin told me something I already knew...But at least the projection of 62 hours recovery after Friday's hard Olallie ride proved correct! I was probably more physically ready than mentally to go hard today. Nevertheless, my legs were tired, but not so much that I couldn't accomplish my two main objectives today: 1) Have a ton of fun 2) Do another long, hard climb to the "unrideable" snow-line. Based on the near foot of snow up above the "Campsite," I am sticking to my mid-May forecast as to when Olallie Ridge is rideable.

ahr:134 max:165 weight:148lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Olallie 1.75x: Yesterday's strategy (and willpower) enabled achievement of today's goal, including a confirmation and reminder. Goal: confirm that I am within 10-15% of my summer fitness level. Reminder: I'm faster on my A bike, but I don't give up much on the B+ bike, especially where it counts-climbing. It wasn't easy doing a short EZPZ paced ride yesterday, but that's what allowed me to have the energy to put in a solid effort the first time up the climb today.

MTB 49:00 [2] 9.5 mi (11.6 mph) +880ft
ahr:107 max:129 weight:148.6lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Local trails and gravel EZPZ: Hardly worth putting on sunscreen. But a worthwhile ride. I wanted to get on the mountain bike, but save as much energy as possible for tomorrow's third hard ride of the week.

MTB 1:40:00 [3] 18.1 mi (10.9 mph) +2042ft
ahr:119 max:148 weight:147.6lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge-Duthie-Downhill Zone great ride ended prematurely. I was psyched to do a little bit of fast riding on perfect dirt at Duthie. Unfortunately, a wiper seal popped out on my fork, forcing me to abort and take the road back. I dropped off my bike at the Downhill Zone. Luckily, I didn't have to walk home in my stiff-soled MTB shoes. Paul A happened to be at the shop, and he gave me a ride.

ahr:127 max:155 weight:147.4lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Raging River-Preston-Home: I didn't ride "hard," but I rode "hard enough" Just as I started up the hour+ climb to No Service, I noticed a rider who was just about ready to roll. He was on a nice XC bike, and he was as skinny as I am and a lot younger. Deciding I needed to stay ahead of him changed my plan of doing the climb at a nice easy pace because I knew I was going to feel the mile of hard climbing I did at Olallie on Saturday. I skipped No Service and did the OAB because: 1) The trails were in great shape, but I knew NS would be muddy 2) I was indeed a bit tired 3) I had to ride the ten miles home 4) a cougar siting a few days ago on Return Policy 5) I wanted to see how far ahead I was of that rider:)

Walking 49:00 [1] 2.8 mi (3.4 mph) +161ft
weight:147.2lbs (rest day) shoes: Scott Kinabalu Supertrack

XXX Porsche car show for some reminiscing. The black car is exactly like the 930 Turbo (today's version is the 911 Turbo) that I drove for seven years. My mode of transportation these days is a little slower.

MTB 2:53:00 [4] 24.7 mi (8.6 mph) +5482ft
ahr:129 max:160 weight:147lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Olallie 2x: Record established in March falls in April. Just after midnight, we had .03" of rain, making today the 16th straight day of measurable rainfall. That eclipses the record of 14 days in a row set in March! My high point was the "Campsite," the 1st time I've been there since Feb. 2nd.

Walking 1:11:00 [1] 4.2 mi (3.5 mph) +50ft
weight:147.2lbs (rest day) shoes: Scott Kinabalu Supertrack

Gold's-Lake Sammamish-Costco one-way walkabout. Tracy dropped me off when she went to the gym and then I met her at Costco for grocery shopping. The last part in Lake Samm was on a somewhat muddy unmaintained trail along Issaquah Creek.

MTB 2:05:00 [3] 21.4 mi (10.3 mph) +2370ft
ahr:117 max:150 weight:147.6lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge-Duthie: A lesson for another clueless dog owner. "Leave it, leave it" was the request made in a sing-song voice as two eighty pound dogs barreled towards me. Not taking any chances, I stopped and got a foot ready to defend myself. I heard "Leave it" again as I rode away, and then a low guttural growl as the dogs chased after me. Turning my head and looking back at the dogs, I yelled "NO, NO" in a loud, harsh, and aggressive voice, a tone that I knew these untrained and out of control dogs had never heard before. The word wasn't important, since these dogs were not familiar with any commands. Leash your dogs and control them! Why not even train them? That's not my job!

Grand Ridge RT-Duthie-Soaring Eagle: Good soil isn't interchangeable with common dirt. In contrast with yesterday's snow and mud at Raging River, I had spectacular trail conditions at GR-D-SE. I'm no Dirt Doctor, but I know that RR (and Tiger) trails have a lot of clay that prevents them from draining as well as GR (and Olallie).

MTB 2:54:00 [4] 27.2 mi (9.4 mph) +3297ft
ahr:117 max:144 weight:147lbs shoes: SW MTB 2012

Raging River-Preston-High Point-Home: Fresh tracks, recon, and a reminder. Today was my first ride at RR since late January. I was reminded that if it is wet anywhere, it will be muddy at RR, and a muddy RR just isn't that much fun, nor is it worth going if I can't ride all the way across the clearcut. Despite the blue skies, as I rode higher into a fog zone, it hailed lightly for a few minutes. Last night's fresh snow started around 2600' elevation.

MTB 1:06:00 [2] 12.2 mi (11.1 mph) +1053ft
ahr:105 max:127 weight:146.6lbs shoes: SW MTB 2012

Local trails and gravel EZPZ with an Italian pit stop. I didn't expect to see a Ferrari 365 GTB Daytona on a cloudy day with showers possible. There was a 2019 Portofino (ho-hum) as well as an odd Lambo or two at All Italian Day, as well as a smattering of Ducati motorcycles.

Olallie 2/3 of a repeat of last Sunday's three peat. In other words, I did the first 4+ miles of the O climb twice, not three times. The Olallie Rain Gods toyed with me again, as it started to rain steadily just as I pulled into the parking lot. This time it stopped after 5 minutes. I did get rained on late in the ride, but the sun came out for 30 seconds and made up for it. It was 12 degrees warmer and sunny when I got back to Issaquah.

ahr:110 max:137 weight:146.2lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Olallie Folly: It wasn't supposed to be one of those days...It rains a lot more in North Bend than Issaquah (and almost twice as much as Seattle's annual 37"), so there are a lot of days where it rains in NB and nowhere else. It was dry all morning in Issy. It was supposed to stop raining at 10:30 in NB, and it had stopped when we arrived at the parking lot at 11. But it started raining steadily two minutes later and never stopped. Well, actually it did, because when I got back to Issy, the roads were dry, the sun was out, and it was 55 degrees as opposed to 43 when we left Olallie. Today was my shortest ride at O ever, and while it would have been more enjoyable to ride GR, Pat and I still had a good time. I felt a little guilty since I was the one who suggested riding O after detailed weather research.

Bicycle Adventures should be called Bicycle Misadventures. During the weekend, over twenty cherry trees were cut down in front of Bicycle Adventures in Preston. That's bad enough anytime, but especially when they are blooming. Judging by the evil eye the workers gave me as they were finishing up, I'm not the only one who noticed. I'm contacting the city to see if this was permitted. Perhaps BA doesn't own the building, but I suspect the motivation was to increase visibility of their sign from I-90. On a positive note, it started to rain 30 seconds after I finished my ride.

Olallie extra credit justifications for a triple play plus alternative ride titles. Original thinking: climb 4m to the snow line 3x to get in a solid ride before more bad weather. Bonus reasons: 1) Tracy is spending a week on Maui 2) Ride enough to amortize driving time (and bike cleaning) to make the trip worthwhile 3) bonk training since I didn't have quite enough food 4) First 2019 5k (and 6k) climbing day. Alt ride titles: 1) "You are my hero" from two different groups that I passed for the third time on my second trip up 2) Twin Peaks Day since I rode up into the fog and mist three times.

Grand Ridge RT-Duthie-Soaring Eagle: Just Do It. More appropriate today: Just make yourself do it. My goal was a long ride with a few sections of hard riding. After I started, I felt disinterested in riding hard, and I had poor focus anyway, so I wasn't even riding well. When I got to SE, I decided to force myself to ride harder. As my pace lifted, my focus increased out of necessity. My decision positively affected the entire rest of the ride.

Grand Ridge-Duthie Today's weather report: too perfect not to ride. Maybe a DOB would have made sense after yesterday's solid road ride, because (but?) tomorrow's forecast is "more of the same!" It was nice to ride with Greg for a bit.
