5-29-12: Today was my best MTB ride ever…and maybe my best ride ever period. I felt great everywhere and fully recovered from all of my recent riding. I wore my HR band for first time in a long time.
Speaking of the HRM, today was the first time ever wearing it made me go faster, not slower! I found myself pushing harder to try and raise my HR on climbs, because it wasn't that high (only touched threshold once for a few seconds) even though my muscles were telling me I was working pretty hard. I was surprised at how low my HR was on the climbs, so I tried to get it higher! This is telling me that I should be riding harder than I am on the mtb, at least when I feel good like today.
For some reason, my RPE is higher on the MTB compared with my HR vs. RPE/HR on the road bike. Having a power meter on the mtb would be interesting. I spent a lot of time in Sweetspot. Maybe this is one reason the mtb seems to build good fitness for me.
