Working on details for the new bike build.

Lake Sammamish Loop Out for a cruise on the bike Z1/Z2. It always amazes me how the wind can be blowing in opposite directions on the east and west sides of Lake Samm. It felt like I was on the wrong side of the equation for most of the ride. West Lake Samm is closed for southbound through traffic due to construction, and that made for very few cars. Even with the 13% detour hill, this is still the easiest ride I can do.

MIs/SLWa Z2. It was calm and sunny when I left home. By the time I got to Cougar Mountain, it was windy with a thick marine layer of clouds. I didn't see the sun again until I got back to Cougar! Today was the first time I have ridden around Mercer Island CW in over 2.5 years. I used to do that at least weekly. New KOM+ lowered my time on existing KOM. while riding Rod the Rain Bike. It's not about the bike!

Farmer's Market berry run with Tracy. Actually, corn on the cob, lettuce, nectarines, zucchini, parsley, cilantro and blackberries and raspberries. Just for kicks, we stopped at Fishers Meats on the way home and picked up a whole chicken. The walk home was like backpacking.

GR/D/HP Marble(falls) and bear alert. Actually, only one marble fall, but falls sounded better. My front tire washed out on the marbles in the middle of a steep right turn. I went down hard on my side, and the marbles are not something you want to land on! I don't fall very often, but everyone who rides MTB does it, so I'll just move on. Much earlier in the ride, a fellow MTBer gave me a heads-up that two bears were crossing the "bog bridge" just in front of me, but they were gone when I got there.

GR/D/HP MTB Magic line through the marbles. Just a few weeks ago the trails were fast rolling and had great grip. The trails are still rolling, but the grip is gone and won't return until we get a little rain. My hat is off to anyone who takes a KOM, or for that matter, a PR in these conditions. Perhaps that is why the trails have been muddy mid-winter deserted all week? I had a great time trying to find marble free lines through the corners!

MTB hills 2:22:00 [4] 24.2 mi (10.2 mph) +2831ft
weight:148.6lbs shoes: SW MTB 2012

GR/D/HP MTB Clear head and scratchy trails. The trails could use some moisture (I can't bring myself to use the "r" word), as they are a little too loose for aggressive riding. That's OK, because it's time to take a break from all of the hard MTB riding I have been doing, and on top of that, my rear shock needs to go to Specialized for a rebuilding.

Gerks/GR/D/pavement home. Out later than normal for me. Tried a different lens in my Oakleys and never got to where I was comfortable with it. Took the pavement back from Duthie instead of riding over GR for the first time in a very long time.

Medina/Kirkland/Redmond. Mostly Z1/Z2 with a few little sprints to adjust to the Rod bike. It's not like it's not a great bike; it's just not the Tarmac, my #1 bike. Rod is a custom steel bike with the same Campy SR11 as the Tarmac. I even designed the paint scheme. It's just not the bike I think of for hard riding. Got a 2nd and 3rd overall

Enatai for Team HPC clinic I miss my Tarmac:( Today was my first road ride since my beloved Tarmac suffered a cracked top tube. I had leaned the bike against a sign, and 5 minutes later it fell and impacted a curb. In all my miles of riding, breaking a bike is a first for me.

Tiger Mountain Chopping it up MTB 7/19/2013. I'd call it "mixing it up," but as usual I rode like a chop at Tiger, where I have a love/hate relationship. It's not as convenient as GR/D, so I ride there a lot less. I always seem to go when I am tired at the end of a period of hard riding, and Tiger riding is different. While the climbs are not as hard as at GR, they are more technical. I always forget how much energy it takes popping both wheels up and over logs and rocks.

Grand Ridge/Duthie MTB Shut up legs. My legs were sore when I woke up, which didn't bode well for a hard ride. I figured I could take a DOB and rest for tomorrow's ride, or say "Shut up legs" and go ride. I rode, albeit not that well or very hard. I did KOM SE Issy FC road climb

Even in mid-July, the morning sun made for difficult conditions going in and out of the shade, especially on the DH sections. On top of that, I had poor concentration and did not ride well. I decided to save my legs whenever possible for my planned four days of MTB riding in a row. My major focus was on getting back to the barn in one piece.

My own personal Ventoux(s): Somerset/Cougar Mountain South/Horizon View/Newcastle Golf/Licorice. It would have been two and out if I wasn't meeting Mark Clausen to do some climbs. I expected to break my Somerset PR (I didn't) and then do the same over at Pinnacle. I bailed on Pinnacle and just did CMS. I met Mark after Somerset and Cougar Mountain and that gave me some motivation to keep climbing.

Grand Ridge/Duthie I love mountain biking. 38 Strava Cups: a PR. 13 KOM's, including lowering times on existing KOM's. The first 2/3 of today's ride was the best I have ever ridden a MTB. Of course, I have said that many times before. Another way MTB is like golf is that there is always room for improvement, and that makes it an incredible amount of fun! I ran into Scott Amerman on the climb back from Duthie. We talked for quite awhile, and then I rode back home at a mellow pace.

Grand Ridge/Duthie/High Point Keep your eye on the ball. I had good energy considering how much and how hard I have been riding, but I didn't have my best rhythm. I started to really focus on my line, down to the millimeter, and I then rode very well. It reminded me of golf. The smaller the target a player focuses on, the more likely he is to hit the ball where he wants to. That concept worked to get my head into the game today! New KOM on Main climb TH to road; two thirds on other climbs.

Grand Ridge/Duthie/High Point. I felt better than yesterday so I rode fairly hard today. Love the 2.2 FT rear tire. 21 Strava cups; lowered my time on two existing KOM's.

ahr:127 max:155 weight:149lbs shoes: SW MTB 2012

Grand Ridge/Duthie/High Point mellow MTB. I felt OK, but not good enough to ride hard. I can tell it's midsummer because the trails were busy for a Monday. Manged to lower time on an existing KOM.

ahr:131 max:171 weight:149.8lbs shoes: S-Works Road 2012

A "few" became 1+7/8+3/4 Highlands/Newcastle Golf Club/Lakemont. The plan was to ride a few climbs hard. I made a solid effort on climb #1, but my heart and legs were not totally into it after that. All of my hard MTB riding is making it tough to get focused and psyched for hammering on the road, but that is a choice, not a problem. Got four KOM's, 2nd and a 6th overall.

Grand Ridge/Duthie/High Point. The trails were a little busy today, which was no problem at all. I was a little too tired for any super hard charging anyway, but I still rode really well.

Cycling 2:16:00 [2] 38.3 mi (16.9 mph) +2270ft

Medina/Kirkland/Redmond Big ring only. No cross chaining into the 27, and cadence over 70 except standing on NE 70th in Kirkland. Today was a recovery ride from yesterdays' hard MTB ride, except for one 55 second "sprint." that got me 9th overall on Meydenbauer 2 climb.

MTB hills 2:37:00 [4] 29.0 mi (11.1 mph) +3054ft
ahr:132 max:160 weight:148.4lbs shoes: SW MTB 2012

Gerks/Grand Ridge/Duthie/HighPoint Fast Trak. With my carbon rear wheel in the shop, I used my old alloy wheel with a S-Works Fast Trak tire. I have been using SW Ground Controls front and rear for a long time. The FT was incredible on the rear in summer dry conditions. I had immediate confidence in it and rode well: 25 Strava cups incl. lowering times on three KOM's I already have, a 4th, 8th, and two 9th's overall.

Grand Ridge MTB broken spoke/flat tire/bad spare tube=hike a bike. Not sure what/how it happened, but I had a trouble combination that proved difficult. A broken spoke wouldn't have prevented me from riding home, but a spare tube with a hole in it did. Trying to patch the tube after it had sealant and grit all over it did not seem promising. Lesson learned" periodically check the spare tube that lies dormant for long periods in the saddlebag!

Hiking 1:24:00 [1] 3.81 mi (2.7 mph) +125ft

Walk out from the woods. I didn't expect to followup yesterday's hike to the top of Squak with another hike today. A broken spoke wouldn't have prevented me from riding home, but a spare tube with a hole in it did. Trying to patch the tube after it had sealant and grit all over it did not seem promising. My super stiff S-Works MTB shoes are not made for walking, but I made it home just as blisters on the back of my heels were developing.
