MTB hills 2:40:00 [3] 25.5 mi (9.6 mph) +3250ft
weight:146.2lbs shoes: SW MTB 2012

Grand Ridge/Duthie/High Point. I f'd up and had the timer off for awhile, so the GPS drew a straight line between points. Actual mileage about 25.5 with 3250' of climbing.

South Lake WA/Mercer Island Catch-up ride with Reg. Light traffic and continuous "convo" the whole ride. Legs felt like crap from standing up all last night at our party, but that is a good problem to have.

Grand Ridge/Duthie Two and a Half Problem Day. #1 (good) problem: Tired from 4th straight day of hard rides (2 road/2 MTB) #2 problem: Overdressed for mid-40 temps the first hour of the ride #3 problem: Got a late start due to some yard work. It was obvious from the radar that I would get rained on, and I did an hour into the ride. Problem #3 took care of problem #2.

BV start/Covington/Flaming Geyser/Black Diamond Summer in the (X City) M.O.N. Ok, so shortly after the ride start I had 36 degrees, fog, and slightly cold fingers. But how often do you get to ride out into the hinterland in late December on clean and dry roads perfect for the summer bike? Throw in spectacular views of a winter Mt. Rainier and no traffic for a perfect day of riding. IOD award goes to the guy running on the Soos Creek path wearing shorts, and no socks or shirt in 38 degree temperature. As I rode up to the house, I toyed with the idea of riding up my 1000' backyard climb to finish off 700k of climbing for the year. I didn't know my magic number, and I wasn't in the mood to go all the way to the top for insurance. Turns out I only needed 45' more to hit my number!

Cycling 2:48 [4] 0.23 mi (4.9 mph) +49ft

What the hell, it's only 700k. I just went out and rode up and down the driveway three times to get those last few feet. Now I will sleep better tonight:)

Ho, Ho, Ho GR/D/HP There's always next year. XMAS is one of my favorite days to ride on the road. The late burning off of the chilly fog made riding MTB a little more appealing today. The decision was made easier by yesterday's great road ride.

Grand Ridge/Duthie/High Point Get a grip! It always takes me several rides to get a feel for tire grip in the muck. Normally that occurs in mid-October, but I crossed that threshold today. That is testimony to how unusually cold and dry our weather has been. I rode well today and had a blast playing in the mud.

South Lake WA/Mercer Island Must be a sure thing. For the first half of the ride there was more traffic than on yesterday's ride, which is odd for a Sunday morning. Perhaps a lot of people went XMAS shopping instead of watching the Seahawks game? Later in the ride, the roads got quiet as I imagine fans were catching the end of the game. Everyone wants to make sure that no unforeseen impediment develops to put in doubt the Seahawks inexorable march to the Super Bowl!

Grand Ridge/Duthie/High Point Mucky...Nutz! It was a perfect day to try out my new fenders from the UK. Yes, they are called Mucky Nutz fenders. I didn't ride very well. I often have trouble adjusting to radical new trail conditions (going to mud from weeks of frozen ground as an example), and I was also having a poor concentration day. My mind would wander to the limited edition watch I am trying to buy, as well as what color helmet to order when I got home. For some reason, the mud seemed really slick today.

Grand Ridge/Duthie 2x/High Point It was nice while it lasted. Bye Bye to our prolonged period of cold and dry Denver like weather. I lived in Denver for almost 15 years, so I am pretty familiar with the weather. There is a cycling upside to the cold. Well, not for road riding, but the trails are in pretty good shape after transitioning from tundra to permafrost, to dry as a bone. Of course, it was -10F in Denver just two days ago, and there is likely a foot or two of snow on the foothills trails. I'd need electric kit and a fat tire bike for those conditions! #5 on Duthie XC

MTB hills 3:02:00 [3] 29.5 mi (9.7 mph) +3681ft

Grand Ridge/Duthie 2x/High Point. Nothing short of amazing trail conditions for this time of the year. Instead of the normal winter coating of mud on the bike after the ride, I had a layer of dust as if I had ridden in July.

Grand Ridge/Duthie/High Point Fred Flintstone . I have always thought people who wore balaclavas on the bike were a little bit of a Fred. I'm not wearing one, but I have started to use a neck gaiter that I can pull up over my face when I want a little extra warmth. It's also kind of nice to not be breathing in the frigid air.

Grand Ridge/Duthie/High Point Crunch Time. Normally we don't have frozen tundra ground to walk and ride over. Typically we have the sloppy sound, not the crunchy sound. I like how the tires roll on the tundra, but I would't want to fall off and land on it.

Grand Ridge/Duthie/High Point Vigilance was my middle name today. It never went over 30 degrees, but I was never cold. There is no mud at all on the trails, but I had to pay attention and not cross frozen puddles at an angle.

Grand Ridge/Duthie/Soaring Eagle High Point Back at it. After my latest riding binge, I was thinking that bad weather might help to convince me to take 2-3 DOB's in a row. But the sun was out (at least until I left Duthie) so I jumped on the MTB. Hovering over Soaring Eagle was a dark purple cloud that soon was sleeting on me. The sun came back out while it continued to sleet for 10 more minutes or so, and the sun was out for the rest of the ride.
