Snoq. Falls/North Bend/Rattlesnake Lake/Mt. Si Part Two. I'm going Dirt-Road-Dirt-Road-Dirt this week, alternating riding MTB and the road bike. I fought a foothills wind the whole way from Fall City to Rattlesnake Lake. I fought it some  more on the way to my favorite foothills mountain. No matter which direction I was riding, it felt like a straight headwind most of the time. There was some fresh snow high on Mt. Si. Three top tens on Rattlesnake climb

GR/Duthie/High Point Party Favors. Tracy hosted a party this afternoon and I wanted to get out of her hair. I try and avoid the trails on weekends, and I don't think I've ever ridden on a Sunday afternoon. It was very busy out there, but there were only two numskulls (I actually called them something considerably worse) out of the whole bunch.

GR/Duthie/High Point/PPoint All things considered. I felt pretty decent despite four hard rides in the last five days, no doubt thanks to a little bit of caffeine.

GR/Duthie/High Point/PPoint Playing a hunch. My bike has been solid as a rock, so I was surprised that it was creaking and groaning on my last ride. I figured it was time to have the suspension pivot bearings replaced (again). Normally the noise comes on gradually to let you know something is wrong. It was so bad on Monday, I didn't think it would be smart to ride the bike until I had new bearings. On a hunch, I checked to make sure all of the pivot bolts were tight. These bolts are tightened to a very high torque level, so I don't check them often. Voila, one of the bolts was not quite snug. On today's ride, my bike was quiet as a lamb. I ordered two bearing and bolt kits anyway, because with the way I ride MTB, stuff can go anytime. I figure I'll need one kit soon, and I wanted another for "inventory."

Grand Ridge/Duthie/Soaring Eagle/HPoint/PPoint There ain't no easy way up. All of the climbs at GR are hard. After yesterday's pretty solid 64m/4000' of climbing road ride, the only ride I should have considered for today was an easy cruise around Lake Samm. My legs were toast out there. The main GR trail is intersected near the top by the paved Grand Ridge Drive. I've seen teenagers get dropped off by their mommy here to ride downhill only, and I know other use a shuttle system to avoid the climbs. What's the point of this? Riding downhill is fun, but it's all about the uphill for me.

Grand Ridge/Duthie/HPoint/PPoint Vern and Autumn make a nice couple. On recent rides, something has seemed different, but familiar at the same time. The sun is just high enough to produce the type of shadows that make depth perception tricky when you ride through the trees in and out of the sunshine. Of course, this also happens in late September, right around the autumnal equinox. But by then, I've had enough of hard summer MTB riding anyway, so slowing down is a good thing. The only difference is that there are no leaves on the trees yet.

Grand Ridge/Duthie/HPoint/PPoint Engineered a Soft Landing. Who am I kidding, I was just luck that I landed on a bed of soft tree boughs after taking my first little fall in quite a while. I just wanted to say "Engineered a soft landing." You don't hear this term much since the economic crash of 2008.

Grand Ridge/Duthie California Dreaming. Tracy has been on a trip to Southern CA, where there have been blue skies and temps in the mid-80's. While I never thought about the weather down there, I did miss Tracy. I'm glad she is back.

Grand Ridge/Duthie "Good feeling to know"... Poco circa 1972. I'm quite tired from my fifth straight day of hard riding. But it's a good feeling, and it's also a good problem. Yesterday I was within 35' of a bald eagle, and today I was 10' from two deer. That's nice, but deer stroll through our yard coming down Squak Mountain heading to Issaquah Creek. I've seen an eagle fly over our house through a skylight.

Grand Ridge/Duthie/High Point/PPoint Mr. Eagle Eye! After I got back to the trailhead, I paused for a scenery break. The full and fast running East Fork of Issaquah Creek was about 70' below me. After a minute or two, I reached into my jersey pocket and there was movement in front of me. A huge bald eagle was taking off from a branch at eye level no more than 35' from me! Eagles, easy access to hiking and mountain bike trails from the house, and creeks all over the place are a few of the reasons we like living in the Cascade foothills. There was good dirt today. With Tracy being the gardener, I doubt I would ever say something like this if I did not ride mountain bikes.

Covington/Black Diamond/Maple Valley Favorite Goldilocks Route. I love this route. The roads are great overall, and there is very light traffic. The climbs are not too steep (except maybe Lakemont, coming as it does early in the ride, not too short, not too long, but are just right for an endurance pace ride.

Grand Ridge/Duthie MTB Mammal Free Zone +1. I didn't see a single human today, and almost went without seeing a single critter as well. Coming down the last trail to the trailhead, I caught some movement with my peripheral vision. I turned just in time to see a deer bounding away.

Grand Ridge/Duthie/High Point/PPoint No Doom No Gloom Based on this week's forecast, I expected little riding, or at least little fun riding. Most of the copious amount of rain we had fell in the evening/overnight. The trails were in remarkably good shape, and I had them to myself. I'm feeling four straight solid MTB rides; even caffeine didn't budge the E-Meter much. Tomorrow I hope to get in an easy road ride on the Prime-time Bike before the next batch of Doom and Gloom hits (or doesn't).

Grand Ridge/Duthie/High Point/PPoint Muddiest but not most muddy. The trails were the muddiest of all winter today, but nowhere near the most muddy of all time. WTA and Evergreen have done a fantastic job improving the trails to reduce the impact of heavy rains. In the last three days of riding, I have seen a total of six people.

Grand Ridge/Duthie/High Point/PPoint Flash Flood Ford. I saw a rain-free window on the radar so I split for the trails. Five minutes later I was in a cloudburst. I've ridden Grand Ridge hundreds of times, and today was the first time I had to fork a creek! The water had overflowed the banks, and it was deep enough that I couldn't see the rocks in the creek. I didn't want to risk T-boning one of them half way across, so I unclipped one foot and kind of pushed my way across, still on the bike. Gotta love MTB adventures! Goofy altimeter readings. Actual climbing approx. 3250'

Grand Ridge/Duthie Cold remedy. I caught the first cold I have had in over ten years. I was a little tired and woozy, and didn't have very good concentration. The trails were messy and I got rained on, but it was still nice to get outside.

Grand Ridge/Duthie It took two rides. To readjust to riding a bike with incredible performance due to properly functioning suspension. It was one of those "gradually getting worse" things. The trails were busy.
