Grand Ridge Bad Ass Birthday Bike Ride. On my birthday, I went out in the rain and muck and rode my age in minutes of hard riding...and then added twelve more.

Grand Ridge/Duthie Better late than never. I didn't start riding until after 1 PM, which is late for me. The trails were deserted and I felt good. My pace doesn't indicate it, but I rode fairly hard. The trails are now quite muddy and covered with leaves.

PPoint/HPoint/Grand Ridge/Duthie Than you (once again) King County DNR. Saturday night's wind storm resulted in more downed trees than I have ever seen at Grand Ridge. The usual King County crew was out bright and early cleaning things up. KC has done a fantastic job of maintaining GR/D over the last few years.

Grand Ridge MTB No Regrets. There was more stuff blown down across the trails than I have ever seen. I had to stop to pick branches out of my spokes. I had to carry my bike over or squeeze under 4' diameter trees. I turned around when I came to a pile of big trees strewn across the trail like a bunch of Pick-up Stix. Ten minutes later, it started to rain hard, so no regrets. Considering that I started at the same time as the Seahawks game, there were a lot more riders than I expected. It's no surprise to me that MTB riders would rather hit the trails than sit around and watch TV. Bogus HRM readings.

Squak-Sycamore hike. I'd been watching the radar and I decided I had about a 50-50 chance of being hit by a fusillade of rain if I rode MTB. I was OK with that, since I usually enjoy riding in the rain, as long as I don't leave the house in it (subconscious rule). As I was getting organized to ride, it started to rain steadily. With some apprehension (and another look at the radar) I decided to go for a walk, something I really enjoy in the rain. As I walked down the driveway, the rain stopped. Strike 1! Ten minutes into the walk the sun came out (and stayed out). Strike 2! Should have gone riding. Right as I was about to exit the woods, I came upon a doe and her very small fawn. I spoke calming words as I approached until I was within 20'. I watched the doe nudge her baby and off they went. Home run!

Grand Ridge/Duthie Straight from summer to winter. We didn't have much of a fall, and the trails are now in mid-winter condition. The upside of that is that the summer seemed to last forever this year. Thanks to the new weir, I saw four coho in Issaquah Creek upstream from the hatchery.

Issaquah/Highlands (sub) urban village lunch with Tracy. We checked out the recent heavy commercial development of the lower Issaquah Highlands. No matter what they call it, it's still a (very dense) suburb to me. We had lunch at Bai Tong. Six mile walk with 605' of climbing.

GR/Duthie/PPoint/HPoint Puddles of Mud. Hmmm...that sounds like a good name for a rock band. While the trails are still in good shape overall, there are now some genuine muddy sections. Every year at this time I have to adjust to the different dynamics of bike handling and tire grip in the mud.

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle 2X Big Mo and the Mojo. Momentum is your friend 99.9% of the time when riding MTB, but it takes good Mojo to capitalize on it. I took my own self-coaching advice and focused on line and technique today, even when riding very easy sections. I rode much more confidently than I have been recently. Confidence breeds good Mojo. Riding with momentum requires and simultaneously breeds confidence.

Medina/Kirkland/Redmond Last Minute Decision. Rest day or ride day? I'm glad I got out, because any day with a ride is a good day. Three IPD's: two peds and one driver. I can't recall not having to wear knee warmers by now.

GR/Duthie/HPoint/PPoint Delayed Onset Endoitis. I am now spooked by anything with even the smallest endo potential. Three weeks after I endo crashed, stuff that I have never given a thought (even when I rode it a week after the crash) now has me psyched out. I didn't somersault when I crashed, but I did go over the high side. All you have to do is to watch a MotoGp motorcycle race to realize how bad an endo can be. On a bike, it's by far the worst non-car involved fall with the greatest risk of serious injury. It's not easy to ride well with this in the back of my mind. I sometimes dismount If I am not comfortable as I approach a tricky spot on the trail, no matter how many times I have ridden smoothly through it. If I were coaching someone in my situation, I would have them go back and work on the fundamentals to rebuild confidence. It's no different than when Tiger Woods works on his latest comeback, except his confidence is likely very rattled by having to face Rory McIlroy.

Grand Ridge/Duthie/Soaring Eagle 2X Confidence Time Machine. I'm experiencing a multi-year confidence setback. Unfortunately I can't go back in time and undo my crash of three weeks ago, which is causing it.

Grand Ridge/Duthie/Soaring Eagle 2X Perfect fall timing. The trails are in great shape, but tricky spots are sometimes covered in leaves. It's sunny, but the light is flat and that makes depth perception more difficult. No matter, as always at this time of the year, I get sick of riding hard, both on the trails and the road. This year that also has something to do with my Tiger Mountain crash two weeks ago.

South Lake Washington/Mercer Island The clock is ticking...Nothing is infinite, including wisdom and the weather. Today's ride was even more special than usual because I was very aware that there are a finite number of great weather days left this year. At times this past summer it seemed that there was an infinite supply of absolutely perfect days.
