GR/Duthie/HPoint/PPoint Maybe I'll have to set a goal to climb more in 2015. I wound up with 753,554' in 2014, with 537,820' of that on the MTB. If I could only just climb over 500k on the road like I used to every year, I'd have a million. Of course, 500k on the MTB feels as hard as two million road feet would be!

Grand Ridge/HPoint/PPoint. Sunny and cold weather makes for some pretty good mid-winter mountain biking trail conditions.

Medina/Kirkland/Bellevue=Misery It wasn't supposed to rain this afternoon. But it did in Kirkland, heavily with some small hail thrown in. I could tell it was raining up north. Since when is Kirkland part of the Convergence Zone? I got drenched, and my hands ranged from cold to frozen. Rarely am I as glad to finish a ride as I was today.

Grand Ridge/PPoint/HPoint Extended New Year's. If NYE is the "amateur drinker's" holiday, the entire XMAS-New Year's period is the amateur hiker holiday. It's the time of the year when I see unfamiliar people with off-lease and unsupervised dogs on the trails. I play it cautious, and hope that some of the people will turn into full time walkers. I cut the ride short, as there were also quite a few bikes on the trails.

Grand Ridge/HPoint/PPoint Sloppy but Sunny XMAS Eve Ride. After the recent 2 3/8" of rain I knew the trails would be slow rolling with some tricky spots. I took advantage of the sun and blue skies to take some great photos and video.

GR/Duthie/HPoint/PPoint Good Virbations. My rides of late have all featured a focus on filming. I'm still deep in the "playing with a new toy" phase, but I know for sure that I wish I had ridden with an action cam in the Sierras last June. In fact, I wish I had used a cam on all of my cycling trips. I guess I will have to redo all of my cycling adventures to get some good footage.

Redmond/Kirkland/Medina/May Valley Cycling's most embarrassing moment. I failed to unclip and toppled over for just the second time in over 100,000 miles of riding. I was waiting behind a car to make a right turn on red. The driver didn't move when traffic was clear. I was in a "track stand" anticipating the car making the right. The driver was being cautious, figuring that I might whip around her on the inside and go (like some cyclists would do), and perhaps I was in her blind spot. Normally I try and anticipate how a driver might react if they are used to seeing cyclists break laws, etc, but I didn't anticipate this one! The driver stopped to make sure I was all right, and sure enough, she explained that she didn't want to hit me if she turned right, so she just waited.

GR/Duthie/PPoint/HPoint Only bad decision was the first one. Well, not really bad; more like a mistake. I use my backyard MTB track conditions to judge how muddy the trails might be. I jumped on the B bike just to be safe. Turns out the only significant mud I saw was 5' past the first trailhead. I still had a blast riding the B bike, because it isn't exactly chopped liver.

GR/Duthie/PPoint/HPoint You go first. No, you go first. A guy riding from the opposite direction who appeared to be at least ten years younger than me arrived at the GR TH just before me. Instead of starting the climb, he decided to "look" at his rear wheel, and waved me on. Never saw him again. Coming back up the climb from Duthie I rode by a young guy walking his bike up the climb. What up with that?

GR/Duthie/HPoint/PPoint Very good, maybe great, but not perfection. There were a few soft muddy spots, but overall the trails were in good shape and the dirt was grippy. Perfection is when the trails have just a tiny bit more grip, and while still soft, result in a bike post-ride that doesn't require cleaning.

Local Climbs Lost in Density. I did some alternate route exploring. After spiraling into a cul-de-sac maze, I had to go up to go down. I'm amazed and disgusted at how many houses builders have been able to cram into one big local hill.

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle (aborted) 700k climbing day XMAS came early. Today I went over 700,000' of climbing for the year. Last year that happened on Christmas Day. Too much mud at SE for the summer bike so I bailed.

Grand Ridge/Duthie/HPoint/PPoint Trail Farts. Riding over the extensive hoarfrost on the trails results in an almost never ending and highly variable series of noises, similar to what some people produce.

Grand Ridge/PPoint/HPoint Six Point Day. Coming home on the dirt road from the GR trailhead, I chased a six point buck for about 200 yards. Several times he slowed and turned his head for a peek to see if I was still there. Finally he bounded off the road and up a  hill. I have weighed over 150# since November 15th:(
