Walking 50:00 [1] 3.0 mi (3.6 mph) +340ft
weight:153.6lbs (rest day) shoes: Altra Olympus 2.0 11.5

Park Pointe-Sycamore Fully elective DOB. Today would have been a great day for a ride, but I chose to rest. I love riding every single day, but I also love having some energy when I do ride. Riding six or seven days a week guarantees that none of the rides will be done when I actually feel good on the bike. Time to practice what I preach.

Grand Ridge-WT-HP-PP Shortish but Sweetish...I was a bit tired from yesterday's chilly and wet 50 mile road ride. I did a shorter than normal ride, but still managed to make a decent effort.

Cycling 2:56:00 [3] 48.9 mi (16.7 mph) +2290ft
ahr:127 max:152 weight:154.2lbs shoes: SW road 2013

Black Diamond-Covington 1st road ride since Nov. 8th Election Day and it was a re-do. I did the same route today as I did on November 8th. I'm not political at all, but I bet a lot of people wish that there could be a re-do on the election. It was 70 degrees with deep blue skies on 11-8, but today the temp was 45-50 and I got caught in the rain. For the first few minutes of the ride the Tarmac felt a little foreign, as did my snug Assos kit, but I quickly adapted, because it was just like riding a bike!

Grand Ridge-WT-Duthie Two things mutually exclusive on the HOWC but not on a MTB. In the nine years I led the Hills of the West Coast ride, I never once came home feeling I "rode really well" if I didn't ride really hard. Today I didn't ride hard at all, but I rode really well. There is just so much more to riding a MTB than turning the pedals. For ex., I spent some time dialing in when it feels more efficient to bunny hop obstacles than to just ride over them.

Grand Ridge RT-WT 2x-HP-PP Today's little bonus. I rode by a guy walking his bike up a steep climb at GR. He was half my age, but was breathing twice as hard. I like that.

Park Pointe-High Point-Grand Ridge-WT. Yesterday was about riding hard. Today was about taking it easy on a short ride.

MTB 2:17:00 [4] 23.2 mi (10.2 mph) +2703ft

Grand Ridge RT-Water Tower Rest days are fun, but only after they are over. Thanks to a light riding week, I had my best energy on the bike in a long time. I've love to feel this good riding more often, but that would mean more days not riding, and that's not a tradeoff I am willing to accept.

Grand Ridge RT-Water Tower 2x 99.9% and a close call. Despite the recent heavy rains, 99.9% of the trail was in great shape, making me wish that I was on my summer bike. The other .1% was muddy enough to get my winter bike pretty dirty, so I guess I made the right call. Or did I?

MTB 2:09:00 [4] 20.4 mi (9.5 mph) +2113ft
ahr:118 max:151 weight:153.2lbs shoes: SW MTB 2012

Grand Ridge-Water Tower 2x-HP-PP Normal conditions and temperature felt abnormal. A strong foothills wind sucked up moisture, so there wasn't much mud after the recent heavy rain. The trails were mostly damp and grippy. It was nice not having to worry about ice when riding to and from the trailhead.

Rainier-Creekside Trails Issaquah Creek resembles the Amazon River more than a creek. I stopped by the Downhill Zone to chat with Adam. The sun came out briefly while I was on my walk, but more rain is on the way.

Park Pointe-DT Issy Riding mud-free frozen trails has been a ton of fun, but I still missed the rain. As usual, I enjoyed walking in a steady rain. I stopped at the library to catch up on some magazines.

Grand Ridge RT-WT Five and Dime. Five for five hard MTB rides in a row. Dime for the conditions being a ten for mid-January, with today being the best of the five. The trails are still pretty frozen, but a lot of the frosty surface was gone, with just a trace of mud starting to form.

Grand Ridge-WT-Soaring Eagle Ped Day. As opposed to yesterday when there were zillions of bikes on the trail, today was the day for hikers and runners. There were still lots of bikes, but more in line with a typical winter Sunday. It's great to see so many people using the trails (as long as they stay away during the week, so I can have them to myself:)

MTB 2:12:00 [4] 21.7 mi (9.9 mph) +2339ft

Grand Ridge-Duthie Either the cat is out of the bag, or everyone's NY Resolutions are still intact. Just a few years ago, I would have the trails to myself during a cold snap. It seems that I am no longer the only one who knows that frozen frosty trails provide the best conditions in winter. I passed 33 riders on a one-way trip to Duthie. There were even more coming towards me in the other direction. I saw multiple group rides of 6-10 people, which is highly unusual for MTB. I took the road home to avoid the busy GR trails.

Grand Ridge RT-WT2x One year anniversary ride on Friday the 13th and nothing was dodgy. I celebrated my left shoulder major surgery anniversary by focusing and riding well. After rehab strength building, I have an upper body that is stronger with better joint health than at any time since I was 18 years old, prior to the motorcycle crash that originally hurt the shoulder. Thanks to the continuing hard work, my right shoulder and elbow tendons are also no longer in dodgy condition. The true test comes when I return to the golf course in the spring.

PP-HP-Grand Ridge RT-WT Wet and muddy trails were a nice change of pace, and a reminder of a similarity between riding MTB and golf. It seems like I have been riding frozen trails for a long time, but conditions were radically different today. Changing conditions make playing the same golf course over and over challenging and fun. Even the mud itself varied during my ride. On the south side of GR, there was normal winter "grippy" mud. Dropping down the north side, the trail was still semi-frosty in places, and the partially frozen mud was slick.

Grand Ridge-WT-Soaring Eagle 2x "I need a photo for a school project to prove I am walking outdoors with a parent" Has it really come to this? After I took their photo by the Soaring Eagle TH sign, the mother and her 12 year old son took a 50' round trip walk on the dirt road that leads to the trails in the park. I guess that was to make them feel honest. As I watched them walk home up a neighborhood street, I was happy that at least they had not driven to the TH.

Grand Ridge RT-Water Tower Loop: great new "beginner" trail on Grand Ridge. The WT Loop is now officially open. As opposed to the rest of GR climbs (which vary from "quite steep" to "really, really steep"), the grade on WT is consistently mellow. King County Parks designed the trail to use as much of the available land as possible, and that means the trail twists and turns. WT is where I will go if I am giving a lesson to a neophyte MTB rider (including Tracy if she decides to learn), or anyone who wants to work on cornering.

Grand Ridge RT-Duthie Frozen trails are fun, but the cold sucks the energy right out of me. I was totally comfortable, but mid 20 temps made a three hour ride feel much longer.

Grand Ridge Round Trip-WT Thank you WTA, King County Parks, and Evergreen MTB...I stopped to take a couple of videos of the work crews finishing up the new Water Tower Loop Trail at Grand Ridge. I'm sending it to them for their websites.

Sycamore-Park Pointe-Creekside with Tracy. I wasn't that motivated to ride in the cold, mostly because of the 1.5m ride to the trailhead on icy roads.

Grand Ridge Round Trip-WT Cold, snow, and ice made for tricky but fun conditions. Riding speeds were slow, but it was a good day to take the GoPro for the white scenery. Stopped to talk to Brett and Bruce from King County Parks.
