MTB 3:38:00 [3] 34.7 mi (9.6 mph) +2920ft
ahr:109 max:140 weight:146.8lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge-Duthie-Soaring Eagle 2x Saved another dog, and it feels good. As I rode home from the trails, an unfamiliar dog was running down the middle of Wildwood. I could tell that she had no concept of the road, and surmised that she was an escapee from a (hopefully) nearby house. She took a liking to me, and I was able to calm her down enough to read her collar tag, which luckily had an address. Daisy followed me to her home. There was nobody home, and a rather large and somewhat aggressive dog began barking at me through a 4' window with no screen. I was able to stuff Daisy through an unlocked door without releasing the other dog. I spoke with a neighbor who assured me that the dogs were not normally let loose outside. She was going to let Daisy's owner know what happened. While not quite the same as saving two dogs from certain death in Whistler in 2009 that were being strangled by their interlocked chain choke collars, it felt good to help Daisy out.

Grand Ridge OAB-Duthie-HP-PP Out in the deep dark rain (free) forest. Due to a dense marine cloud layer, it was as dark as a gloomy January day. Quite a contrast to the 87 degrees, brilliant sun, and deep blue skies of the weekend. I only saw one other person, and that also made it feel a bit like January. The top of Tiger Mountain has been covered in clouds all day.

Mercer Island-SLWa-Cedar River It's not just the Tour de France where races are won on the climbs (and hearts are broken). I had been cruising across the I-90 Bridge when out of nowhere my little mirror was filled with a rider in race kit on the drops, his head down in full aero position. I could tell by his body language that he had made a big effort to catch me, his "rabbit." He passed me and swung right in front of me, a bit too close for my liking. Unfortunately for him, it was right where the little climb up to the tunnel started. As I shifted up and started back around him, I saw him do a little head shake, as if to say, "You must now respect my Greatness for catching you, and stay behind me." I didn't have to step on it very hard to make it appear like he was dragging the Queen Mary behind him up the hill.

Grand Ridge-Duthie-Soaring Eagle Fog-free zone and a half full glass. Today was my best MTB ride so far in 2017. I felt good, rode well, and had good concentration. For the last few months, I have been so low energy that at times I felt like I was in a fog, both on and off the bike. At times I wasn't even interested in riding, but I couldn't wait to get out there today. Perfect weather and spectacular trails didn't hurt, but mostly I just felt better than I have lately.

Grand Ridge-Duthie-Soaring Eagle Back on the MTB. My first MTB ride in a week went great, until I broke a spoke at Duthie. Even that wasn't terrible, as I wrapped it around another spoke and rode to Gerks. Greg will have me up and running tomorrow. After six straight riding days, the broken spoke will help me commit to taking a DOB on a nice weather day.

Marymoor OAB. After four days of riding at Chelan Camp, a complete day of rest would have been a good idea, but it was just too darn nice of a day for that. I think I am more tired from not sleeping in our wonderful bed than from the riding, but it did feel like I rode into the wind the whole time today.

Grand Ridge-WT 3x I wish it was a rare jewell. More than rare, I think today might be the first time I have ridden MTB after lunch. I vacillated so much about riding that morning turned into afternoon. I had just sat down to lunch when the sun came out and looked like it would stay out (it didn't). Once again, I had low energy, even after two straight DOB's. I had a hard time concentrating out there, and didn't ride very well.

Grand Ridge-Duthie-Soaring Eagle 2x Poor Reflection. My low average speed is a direct reflection of my continuing low energy. I was tired at the start of the ride, and really tired at the end. Oh well, going slowly just meant more riding time on a glorious day.

Grand Ridge 2x on Tracy's Trail. I continue to be impressed with the design of the Water Tower Trail. It's fun to ride fast or slow, and suitable for anybody from a beginning MTB rider all the way to an expert. It's the perfect trail for Tracy to learn how to ride MTB, and I am looking forward to taking her there. I was tired from yesterday's hard ride, so I took it very easy. I also cut it short because I am going to the driving range this afternoon!

Grand Ridge RT-Duthie-HP-PP Ride flow in a twitter, but I just cannot litter. I was in a good rhythm and riding well down the north side of GR though a fast curve when I heard (and felt) something. At first I thought a wheel had flung a stick when I caught something in my peripheral vision. I reached back to inspect my pockets and seat bag, and discovered a partially open zipper on the bag. Already distracted, I stopped a little while later, hoping that it wasn't my spare tube that had taken flight. Luckily, the projectile was a granola bar in a bright green wrapper. I had been 50-50 on returning via GR, but I immediately made the decision that I would return and look for the rogue bar. I hoped that I could find it before a critter absconded with it. When I rode through the turn an hour later, there was the undisturbed bar. I rode longer than I had planned, and I was happy to have that bar at the end of my ride.

Medina-Kirkland-Redmond Who need a car show in Seattle? If all you want to see are lots of show-off cars, just cruise around on your bike! Less than a minute after a late model Lambo rolled by me in DT Bellevue, I was passed by a big-ass Bentley sedan and an Aston Martin coupe...back to back, without a single car in between! I don't encounter the kind of cars I like to see: a 1970 Ferrari Daytona to remind me of the one my Denver friend Doug had, or a 1973 Porsche 911s like Joe's, or maybe a 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo like the one I had all those years ago. But wait, when I got back to Issaquah, there went a red 930 Turbo. Not black like mine was, but seeing it kind of made me wish that I still had that car.

Grand Ridge-HP-PP Did I forget to hope for anything? Summer temps and kit, great dirt, ride well, don't fall off, and mostly deserted trails, all check. KOM's, not on the list, but a nice bonus.

Grand Ridge Water Tower 3x Issy Wishy Washy. This morning I prepped the winter MTB for a ride. After the sun came out, I thought I would ride the road bike up some local Issaquah climbs, but then I decided I wasn't motivated to do that. I was contemplating a road route, when I noticed that the warm temp had dried out the yard pretty well, so I prepped the summer MTB. After I changed my kit, I went for a ride. Being able to access great roads and trails from the garage lets me make last minute decisions!

Sycamore-Park Pointe So far May feels a lot like April. In other words, instead of riding my summer MTB on dry trails like normal this time of the year, I went for a walk with my hood up a fair amount of the time. Not that I mind walking, or light rain, but we have definitely had an odd stretch of weather.
