MTB 3:38:00 [4] 34.6 mi (9.5 mph) +4571ft
ahr:119 max:150 weight:149lbs

Grabbing a Tiger Mountain by the tail: I usually just feel another year older, but today I feel very fortunate-I don't need to go to my high school reunion this weekend. I could have "celebrated" by riding the number of miles of my age, but age isn't a number to me. Age is the way I feel, and I feel fantastic: very fit and healthy, and it doesn't seem like I am getting slower. Orthopedically, I am the best I have been in decades. I don't need to go to the reunion to feel good about my age. I guess I did ride age-specific mileage today. My mileage matches the age that I feel. It was a nice birthday gift to find two seconds and score a KOM. Not such a nice gift was breaking a spoke on Inside Passage, and another one on Joy Ride! I skipped climbing Iverson and up to Poo Poo Point on the way home.

Grand Ridge-Duthie-Soaring Eagle: Worth the wait. It took awhile this morning for the marine layer of fog to burn off, but what followed was a glorious afternoon.

John Wayne Trail Gradual Gravel Grooving with Tracy. I've never understood the gravel bike phenomenon. Today's boring ride surely isn't representative, or is it?

MTB 2:05:00 [4] 18.8 mi (9.0 mph) +3364ft
ahr:138 max:156 weight:147.6lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Raging River: No extra credit today. I felt pretty decent, but after Tuesday's big ride at Olallie, I didn't feel like doing another one today. So I skipped the lollipop loop. After just 200' of climbing, I rode above a thick blanket of fog into deep blue skies. There was an inversion, and it was ten degrees warmer up top. There was also a strong foothills wind with 30+ mph gusts up high in the clearcut zone.

PP-HP-Grand Ridge: Changed my mind...twice. The first thing I noticed was that my legs were pretty tired after yesterday's hard ride. Then I discovered that I had forgotten my water bottle. I decided that doing a ten mile loop on gravel roads to High Point and the Issy-Preston trail might be a good idea. Any day with a bike ride is better than one without, but a short loop on gravel roads didn't qualify for me, so I changed my mind again and went up Grand Ridge. The legs felt (a little) better as the ride went on, and I took advantage of trails in perfect condition.

Mile High Big Daddy Olallie 1.67: First time for fitness; second time just for kicks. I went up the 6.5m climb the first time at a solid pace for fitness (I refuse to use the word "training" for something I love). I did the first 2/3 of the climb a second time just for the fun of it, including the incredible descent. Unfortunately, I bonked hard, as I had forgotten to bring food. Turns out I had two Clif Blocks in my pocket, but the bonk blurred my thinking and erased my memory!

Grand Ridge-Duthie Rainy season postponed for Indian Summer-overbiked but not overdressed. A temperature of 66 degrees is only a few degrees above normal, but this week's blue skies will be a nice contrast to last week's rain. I certainly didn't need the winter bike or its fenders today.

Squak Mountain No erosion, no mud, not even a puddle. We've had 4.94" of rain at the house since the rainy season began in earnest six days ago. The trails remain in excellent condition.

Grand Ridge RT WT 2x Amazon get the ball rolling, use eBay, and make Seattle great again! AZ certainly knows where they want to build HQ2, so leverage the hell out of them and get started. Perhaps listing on eBay would help sort things. Seattle has enough growth without another 50,000 jobs to make things so crowded that Tracy and I will want to move away. Issaquah is cycling nirvana, and it's only going to get better as long as AZ grows elsewhere.

Grand Ridge-HP-PP Ready or not, here I come. I wasn't sure what to expect on my first rainy season ride after lots of wind and three inches of rain over the last three days. There was only one downed tree to hop over, and the trails were wet but almost totally mud free. I wasn't sure what to expect on my first rainy season ride after lots of wind and three inches of rain over the last three days. GR RT-Duthie-Soaring Eagle-HP-PP Spectacular end to my 2017 Go-fast Season. As in spectacular weather, not results, but I did ride very well on a pretty big ride. I have taken more rest days this year, which has paid dividends in terms of having energy to ride hard. It's difficult to believe that today's mid 60's and deep blue skies are going to be followed by an atmospheric river of rain. The ensuing mud will slow the trails down, as well as make the roots and rocks a little slippery. The light this time of the year is a little flat, making it more difficult to discern the trail contours. Of course, none of that is a factor with road riding, but I think I have reached my mental limit for riding really hard anyway.

Redmond-Kirkland-Medina: Bye Week buildup-go long HD. Traffic was easily 3x a normal Sunday anytime I was near a commercial area. Saturday is usually Home Depot day, but people must have been running errands all weekend that they have been saving up since the start of the NFL season.

MTB 2:54:00 [4] 30.4 mi (10.5 mph) +2919ft

GR-Duthie-Soaring Eagle: A disability but not a handicap, except for the bike. While descending the steepest section of GR, I came upon a fellow riding an old road bike. He was on the drops, and when he stopped to let me by, I noticed that he only had one leg. He seemed to be doing OK. Heck, he was doing fantastic, all things considered. He must have quite a sense of adventure and relish a challenge, because having to dismount and hike-a-bike would be difficult. Bravo!

Grand Ridge-Duthie Dragging Assos into the dirt. I wore Assos for the first time ever on a MTB ride. Yes, the Intermediate Jersey I wore today is at least 12 years old, but it's still in great shape after a zillion uses on the road bike. Besides, the jersey color really goes nicely with the mountain bike. Assos (and Campagnolo) quality can't be beat-you get what you pay for.

Grand Ridge Water Tower 2x Missed the Sweet Spot but I was going to do laundry anyway. After looking at the hourly forecast and radar, I thought I had picked the optimal riding window. My plan was to wait for it to warm up, but finish before the rain. I got nice and dirty riding home in the rain. The sun is out now as I do the laundry.

GR RT-Duthie-Soaring Eagle-HP-PP Dirt Utopia. The dirt is in a very good place right now. There has been enough moisture to eliminate the summer dust, but not enough to produce the winter mud. The trails are still rolling fast, but are damp and tacky enough so that grip is tenacious.

Run with the Fishes-Salmon Days-Park Pointe Go Tracy! I watched Tracy leave the starting line at the Run with the Fishes 5K. I checked out the XXX Chargers and Challengers car show, but it was early and wet roads made for low attendance. I then cruised through Salmon Days while the vendors were setting up their tents.

ahr:128 max:149 shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Raging River "No pressure" fun: just as fun, just a different type, and not Type II. Today was my seventh trip to RR since it opened in July, and the first time I have gone with no intent of riding the 8.5m climb really hard. Having done a monster Olallie ride on Wed. with a mile of climbing, I knew it would be a Z2 effort today. I rode the DH really well, but the PR's were made possible by superbly grippy dirt.

Cycling 2:24:00 [3] 36.2 mi (15.1 mph) +2235ft

Mercer Island CW. A DOB would have been good after yesterday's very hard MTB ride. I rode really easy, as it was too nice to not ride. I'm doing another really hard MTB ride tomorrow, and I wonder how I will feel. Decisions, not problems!

MTB 2:54:00 [4] 25.5 mi (8.8 mph) +5487ft

Olallie 1.67x: Voluptuous Velcro coating on dust bunny-free trails. No climbing Top Tens today, but it was a solid effort for October Fartlek season. The downhill PR's were the result of slightly damp and grippy trails. I didn't violate my downhill 75% rule, but I rode very well.

Grand Ridge-Duthie-Soaring Eagle: The "new" thrill is long gone, but this is even better. Like many things, MTB riding has a pretty steep learning curve. It's easy to make big skill gains rapidly when you are a newbie. After many, many hours on the bike, I am still getting better, but it is a gradual progression. It's super rewarding to ride a trail for the first time in a while, and instantly recognize that I am a better rider than the last time. It's a subtle thing, but the PR's prove it.
