Grand Ridge Happy New Year! It was a wee bit chilly.

Grand Ridge RT: The Hardtail didn't feel like a "B" bike today, nor did it feel like a Hardass like it can at times. Considering the recent wind and rain, the trails are in great shape.

Park Pointe-Adventure Trail with Tracy: No retrospective remorse. The plan was for a rainy walk with Tracy. When the rain didn't materialize, in hindsight I realized it would have been a nice morning for a MTB ride. But I can do that anytime, and it was great to be out with Tracy.

PP-HP-Grand Ridge: Lifetime PR and Snow King of the Mountain. I rode through the most snow I've ever ridden through on two wheels today. I once tried to ride my motorcycle home from college over a snowy mountain pass. I'm not counting that, since my dad picked me up the next day after I spent the night in a motel. I only encountered three other riders today dedicated (crazy?) enough to be out in the snow. I passed them on a climb, so I guess I am today's Snow KOM.

Grand Ridge frosty tundra trails are good for the "A" bike, and that's usually worth a few points on the energy meter. But not today. I was definitely feeling yesterday's tough ride on the hardtail. That's OK, because the trails were frosty enough to make the riding tricky at times.

MTB 3:19:00 [4] 30.5 mi (9.2 mph) +2973ft
ahr:120 max:146 weight:148.2lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

GR-Duthie-Soaring Eagle: Thank you Washington Trails Association, and Merry XMAS (party). WTA had a crew of 45 volunteers working on Grand Ridge for four days. This week was the annual Christmas Grand Ridge work party. All of the hard work has resulted in some significant improvements on the south side of GR, as well as on the Water Tower Trail.

Hiking 46:00 [2] 2.6 mi (3.4 mph) +697ft
(rest day) shoes: Altra Olympus 2.0 11.5

Squak Mountain Sojourn. While not as good as a bike ride, a walk in the woods is always nice, especially when I start almost at my front door.

MTB 2:36:00 [4] 23.8 mi (9.2 mph) +3022ft
ahr:116 max:145 weight:147.4lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge RT: Different, but definitely not better. After a few rides on the hardtail, I was back on one of the FS bikes today. The hardtail is fun because it is different, but FS is definitely "better." I have a new dilemma to work out if I get a new bike.Today was the first time I have ridden MAC for a month and I don't think I can bring myself to sell it. I love it too much. I've always thought that three MTB's would be one too many, but now I'm not so sure...

Walking 15:00 [1] 0.75 mi (3.0 mph)

Walk to hatchery to meet Tracy for dinner at Las Margueritas.

Grand Ridge Round Trip: Rain? What rain? I was absolutely astounded at how good trail conditions were after almost three inches of rain over the last few days, especially considering how saturated the trails were yesterday during my rainy hike.

Grand Ridge RT-Duthie: Crowded trails but only one IPD. Just one bozo who had to be flying down the trail, even though there were lots of hikers, runners, and riders, including me. As impressed as I was (not really) that he saved a wipeout after getting his rear tire hung out about 35 degrees, he had no business ripping through a series of blind curves. There is a time and a place for that, and it's not on Saturday at GR.

ahr:111 max:142 weight:147lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

GR-Duthie-Soaring Eagle: Near 100% capitalization rate yield results in a good investment. In fun, that it. Today makes nine MTB rides in the last ten days. I took a DOB on Saturday only because I knew the trails would be busy. Gotta take advantage of fantastic conditions during a highly unusual dry spell in the middle of the rainy season.

MTB 2:23:00 [4] 23.0 mi (9.7 mph) +2446ft
ahr:115 max:141 weight:148.2lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge-Duthie: I don't need Strava Premium to know that I am at least one standard deviation older than the median MTB rider age. Despite the pretty chilly (frigid?) temperature, I came upon four young guys riding together...in shorts. Maybe none of them wanted to dress warmer because of potential teasing from the others? It's rare to spot someone my age wearing shorts when it is below 40 degrees. Perhaps even rarer is spotting a cougar in the mountains, or seeing a MTB rider not wearing a helmet. I saw one later in my ride, and he was also a young guy (not a cougar).

MTB 1:47:00 [4] 17.7 mi (9.9 mph) +2050ft
ahr:121 max:149 weight:147.2lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge: When the frost is on the pumpkin, that's no time for road bike truckin' Hmmm...best rhyme I could think of. There was way too much frost on the roads for my usual Sunday morning road ride. Riding to and from the trailhead wasn't bad, and the trails were in spectacular condition.

Raging River: I now believe in ghost (riders), but not in Back to the Future. No, I shall remain in the past. I saw on Strava that three people made it to the top of Raging last Saturday, so I fully expected to do so today. When I got to the start of the clearcut, there was 4" of snow...and no foot or bike tracks past my turnaround point. Hmmm..it's been sunny all week. After two days of riding the MY18 Epic FS bike, I am so incredibly happy to be back on my MY14 SW Epic World Cup. I may never sell that bike, but of course I have said that before. I did order a MY18 Epic Hardtail this week, and I am really looking forward to riding it.

Lunch RideGR-Duthie-Soaring Eagle: After five straight days of hard riding on three different mountain bikes, Bike Evaluation Week is complete-Tracy, I have returned to Planet Earth. Every so often, I feel a bit of wanderlust and contemplate changes in my bike scuderia. This involves a lot of focused online research, talking with friends about bikes, and testing bikes. I have a new MY18 SW Epic Hardtail frame on its way, but my Epic SW WC full suspension bike is safe, as I far prefer it to the new Epic FS I have ridden the last two days. To say I have been a bit distracted by bikes lately is a profound understatement, but then I am always at least a little distracted by them.

MTB 1:26:00 [4] 12.5 mi (8.7 mph) +2150ft

Olallie on a MY18 Epic FSR. Thanks to Gerks for a demo bike with zero miles. It's always special to deflower a brand new bike, even if one doesn't own it. Scott and I had near perfect trails, at least until we hit the snow level. Rather than deal with ice and slush, we cut the climb short.

MTB 2:16:00 [4] 22.7 mi (10.0 mph) +2480ft
ahr:123 max:149 weight:149lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

GR-Duthie: I ran into (almost) a Motorbicycle and its rider and his pathetic attempt at being clueless. Motorbicycles (I refuse to call them E-bikes) are illegal in King County Parks. On the Water Tower Trail, I came within an inch of a head-on with an approaching rider exceeding his skill level. I could tell this because he seemed frozen and unable to alter his cornering line when he spotted me. His falling over when he came to a stop was another clue. I politely informed him that motorbicycles were illegal at GR, and he acted quite surprised. After I told him he could check it out on the King County Parks website, he replied, "I talked with them and they told me they were OK." Uh, not only is that not going to happen, but the fact that this rider said he discussed it means he definitely knows his bike is not allowed on the trail.

Grand Ridge: 95mm of squish never felt so plush. After three straight rides on the hardtail, I was back on the WC today. The fork and shock were just rebuilt at the Specialized Service Center in SLC, and the ride differences with the HT were dramatic, to say the least.

GR-Duthie-Soaring Eagle: How to turn a Ferrari bike into a Ferrari Formula One bike. Remove the rear suspension...I think of my XC race bikes as kind of two wheeled Ferrari's. Riding a XC hardtail turns it up a notch, even if the bike isn't quite as fast.
