Cycling 2:35:00 [3] 43.5 mi (16.8 mph) +2470ft
ahr:119 max:145 weight:148.8lbs shoes: SW road 2013

Mercer Island-May Valley: Facebook Memory generated Deja Vu. Facebook reminded me that Seattle had its rainiest March in history in 2014. Despite that, I managed over 66,000' of climbing on the bike on twenty rides. March of 2018 was below average in rainfall. I still did twenty rides, but only totaled 63,136' of climbing. I guess I am slacking off!

MTB 1:47:00 [4] 18.4 mi (10.3 mph) +2134ft
ahr:140 max:185 weight:148.7lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

HP-Grand Ridge: Big Daddy Bike is Da Bomb. I have not ridden the Tomcat for over a week=withdrawal symptoms! As great as the MAC is, it is not the Tomcat. Having spent 5+ hours on the new generation MY18 Epic, I know for absolute certain that I won't be getting a new Epic until at least the next generation. No other cross country race bike appeals to me either. In fact, I like the MAC a hell of a lot better than the MY18 bike. I like old school XC, not the new slacker geometry. Bogus HR

MTB 3:43:00 [4] 37.1 mi (10.0 mph) +3879ft
ahr:118 max:147 weight:149.2lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge RT-Duthie-Soaring Eagle-HP: No regrets or laments, and a little bit of rejoicing. After discovering that the dirt was in much better shape than yesterday's sloppy conditions, I wasn't bummed that I wasn't on my "A" dry trail bike. Had I been on the hardtail, that wouldn't have been true. I've been neglecting MAC for quite awhile, and today I rejoiced at how great the bike still is. I also rejoiced that I wasn't on the hardtail, as nearly four hours on that bike is not entirely pleasant.

MTB 2:47:00 [4] 27.8 mi (10.0 mph) +3232ft
ahr:122 max:152 weight:149.4lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

HP-Grand Ridge RT-HP: Big MAC Attack. Today was the first time I have ridden MAC in almost two months, and I love the bike as much as ever. This muddies the waters regarding the hardtail. Speaking of mud, the trails were wet and slow rolling from the recent rains, but I felt good and rode well.

Walking 50:00 [1] 3.0 mi (3.6 mph) +300ft
weight:147.6lbs (rest day) shoes: Scott Kinabalu Supertrack

Sycamore-Park Pointe. It's been awhile since I have gone for a walk in a nice steady rain, and I have missed it.

MTB 2:21:00 [4] 23.4 mi (10.0 mph) +2923ft
ahr:123 max:146 weight:149.2lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge RT: Sometimes even great relationships need a reacquaintance/readjustment period. After a three week hiatus from the hardtail, yesterday's ride wasn't a ton of fun. Today was much better, and maybe the sunshine and better trail conditions might have had something to do with it. Early in the ride, when I discovered surprisingly better trails than yesterday's wet conditions, I was bummed that I was not on my FS bike. It's telling that by the end of the ride, I had forgotten that feeling and was just enjoying riding the hardtail.

MTB 1:46:00 [4] 17.9 mi (10.1 mph) +2102ft
ahr:116 max:145 weight:148.6lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge: Return to winter and Type C fun. C as in Challenge, not Cold, although it was pretty brisk for this time of the year. It's been almost three weeks since I have ridden the hardtail, not that I needed a reminder of how much more challenging the bike is compared to an FS bike. It's been even longer since I have ridden on wet and puddly trails.

ahr:119 max:152 weight:149.4lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge RT-Duthie-Soaring Eagle: Signs that spring has sprung. A single garter snake slithering, a solo woodpecker hammering, a blackberry vine encroaching, frogs croaking, and swallowing a bug on a long and hard climb. The only thing missing is wet spring dirt, but I'll take summer dirt without the dust. Today's ride makes it six MTB rides in the last seven days totaling 20:13 on the bike. Time to rest.

MTB 3:25:00 [4] 35.7 mi (10.4 mph) +3697ft
ahr:120 max:144 weight:150.2lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge RT-Duthie-Soaring Eagle: Doing a rain dance for an unusual reason. I've been riding really, really well, and pretty fast a lot of the time on trails in perfect shape. That combination can enable a bit of overconfidence to slip into the equation. The rainy period starting on Thursday will mean wet, slower rolling trails for a few days, but more importantly, I'll take some time off the bike. Not only do I need the rest, I will reflect on how important my 2018 goal of not falling off the MTB all year is. I've been pushing the envelope a bit, and I need to reset.

MTB 3:41:00 [4] 39.2 mi (10.6 mph) +3883ft
ahr:119 max:158 weight:148.8lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge RT-Duthie-Soaring Eagle-HP: Monday, Monday, best MTB day of the week. Monday is my favorite day to ride MTB because the trails are deserted, even in mid-summer. It's a great day to let the wheels roll a bit.

Sunday Mar 18, 2018 #

MTB 2:50:00 [4] 30.2 mi (10.7 mph) +3004ft
ahr:120 max:153 weight:148lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge-Duthie-Soaring Eagle: Dirt Church was in session. The trails were busier than normal for a Sunday. Olallie, Raging River, and the upper half of Tiger Mountain are still snowed in. It's obvious that I am not the only person who knows that GR-D-SE trails are in fantastic shape.

Walking 30:00 [1] 1.6 mi (3.2 mph) +200ft

Walk with Tracy with a stop at the butcher's.

MTB 3:49:00 [4] 38.4 mi (10.1 mph) +38ft
ahr:121 max:155 weight:147.9lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge RT-Duthie-Soaring Eagle-HP: Rebound Love. I finally got around to recalibrating (i.e, experimenting and picking the setting that works best) my fork rebound setting after the bike's suspension was recently serviced. It's amazing how two clicks of faster rebound improved the bike's handling. Dialed in rebound enables the tires to maintain contact with the ground better, and that translates to smoother and faster performance.

MTB 2:59:00 [4] 28.9 mi (9.7 mph) +3408ft
ahr:119 max:145 weight:149lbs (injured) shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge RT-Duthie-HP: Fantastic dirt, but I was only so-so. Actually, I was lousy on the first half of the ride, and pretty good on the the last part. I average out that reverse split to so-so. Overlake Urgent Care for stitches right eyebrow/bruised palm of right hand-ladder collapsed

Hiking 46:00 [2] 2.6 mi (3.4 mph) +729ft

Squak Mountain back yard hike. Today was a much needed second consecutive DOB, but not quite a rest day.

MTB 4:02:00 [4] 40.2 mi (10.0 mph) +4027ft
ahr:120 max:151 weight:148.6lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

HP-Grand Ridge RT-Duthie-Soaring Eagle-HP: Summer kit, summer SPF, summer dirt, and summer miles with a "4" trifecta. The only thing missing is summer fitness, but I am further along than I normally am at this time of the year. It's rare even in the summer when I ride the MTB 40 miles, with 4 hours ride time and 4000' of climbing, but I finished almost right on the money today.

Cycling 3:08:00 [3] 51.0 mi (16.3 mph) +2809ft
ahr:124 max:152 weight:148.6lbs shoes: SW road 2013

Medina-520-Capitol Hill-Mercer Island: It felt just like riding a bike, only faster and smoother, with a few cars here and there. I have not been on a road bike since November 17th, and that layoff is a "PR" for me. Riding road was tremendous fun, albeit not as dynamic and exciting as riding MTB. There are not many roads around the Seattle area that I have not ridden on, and I wanted to throw in something new for my return to the road bike. Riding across the 520 floating bridge was a logical choice.

MTB 2:08:00 [3] 22.4 mi (10.5 mph) +2395ft
ahr:124 max:150 shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge-Duthie: The high body count made it feel like I was in a Bruce Willis movie. With the fantastic weather, I knew the trails would be busy. I broke my "PR" for number of riders passed while riding MTB, and I didn't even ride back over Grand Ridge. I took the road home from Duthie to avoid the busy trails. I'm used to riding on weekdays when the trails are deserted, and I can ride fast enough for another type of PR.

Hiking 54:00 [2] 2.5 mi (2.8 mph) +688ft
weight:148.5lbs (rest day) shoes: Altra Olympus 2.0 11.5

Squak Mountain hike with Tracy: Rationalization closed with will power. After time spent contemplating all of the ramifications of riding MTB today vs. taking a DOB, I concluded that rest was the best course. Nevertheless, it took a lot of will power to make the decision stick.Being able to hike with Tracy is what closed it for me.

Walking 40:00 [1] 2.0 mi (3.0 mph) +200ft
weight:149lbs (rest day)

Walk to library/haircut

Wednesday Mar 7, 2018 #

MTB 3:44:00 [3] 37.1 mi (9.9 mph) +3779ft
ahr:119 max:155 weight:148.4lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge RT-Duthie-Soaring Eagle-HP: I didn't have the votes for repeal, an executive order would P.O. Tracy, so I went with a temporary stay. A big component of my 2018 goal of not taking a single fall is my self-imposed 75% rule. As in, don't exceed a very subjective "75%" when riding DH. Today, I broke the rule for 5:59 on the Water Tower Trail. I love the trail, the dirt was great, the trail was deserted, and the sight lines are great, especially since the leaves are not out yet.

Tuesday Mar 6, 2018 #

MTB 3:45:00 [4] 37.4 mi (10.0 mph) +3854ft
ahr:120 max:154 shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge RT-Duthie-Soaring Eagle-HP: Pre-ride Go-Juice is a remedy, but not a cure for the disease, and a Booster Shot of tonic lets me double down. It's amazing how different I felt than yesterday when I was quite tired. I used 60mg of caffeine before the ride, and 30mg several hours later. The cure for the fatigue "disease" is a few days off of the bike, but a little bit of caffeine gave me some temporary relief. The mid-ride booster shot enabled me to feel pretty good finishing off my longest and hardest ride of the year. That beats a rest day in my book!

Monday Mar 5, 2018 #

MTB 2:03:00 [4] 20.0 mi (9.8 mph) +2121ft
ahr:113 max:146 shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

HP-Grand Ridge-HP: I know the cure but the medicine tastes bad. It's a little early in the year to be tired and worn out from TMR, but I've managed to do it. With over 120,000' of climbing YTD, 100% of it on the mountain bike, a little rest is the Rx. Taking time off of the bike feels like going to the penalty box, and I have a very hard time doing it.

Sunday Mar 4, 2018 #

MTB 2:14:00 [3] 23.1 mi (10.3 mph) +2507ft
ahr:121 max:147 shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge-Duthie: Search for the mythical water fall. I stopped to answer questions from two visitors headed from the Highlands to Grand Ridge. They were looking for "The Waterfall." China has massive mountains and big waterfalls, and they seemed disappointed when I told them that there was no water fall at GR. I directed them to the creek on the Coal Mine Trail. As I rode through the creek, I second guessed myself, because there are indeed "waterfalls," but they are only 1-2' drops. If you have never left Beijing and only seen a fountain, I suppose that a creek dropping 1-2' might be a "waterfall."

Walking 25:00 [1] 1.3 mi (3.1 mph) +200ft

Creekside walk with Tracy.

Walking 53:00 [1] 3.1 mi (3.5 mph) +373ft
weight:148.6lbs (rest day) shoes: Scott Kinabalu Supertrack

Sycamore-Park Pointe with Tracy: We decided not to investigate the deepest snow cover of the year on Squak and Tiger Mountains. I half-heartedly suggested hiking up Squak until we reached the snow line, which looks to be at about 1600' elevation. Tracy vetoed the proposition, which is just as well, because I am tired from TMR. Too Much Riding!

Thursday Mar 1, 2018 #

MTB 2:53:00 [4] 27.7 mi (9.6 mph) +3307ft
ahr:120 max:145 weight:148.4lbs (injured) shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

HP-Grand Ridge RT-HP: Old problem-not wanting to ride my "A" MTB on wet winter trails. Solution-"B" bike. New problem-not wanting to ride less than my "A" bike...Solution-another "A" bike. So I will go from B+A to A+A, just as soon as I can order a new MY19 SW Epic Hardtail. Actually, I will then have (A+)+(A+)=MTB nirvana. Immediate problem-forcing myself to take a rest day after four straight hard MTB riding days (and six of the last seven and ten of the last twelve). Solution-ride the "A" MTB to the shop in a few minutes. Not being able to ride it for two days might prevent me from riding, unless I decide to ride my "A" road bike for the first time since November. Right shoulder stiffness/pain approx. start.
