Park Pointe: Testing 1-2-3. On Tuesday and Wednesday I rode the Gerks MY18 size medium Epic. Today I fit the size large MY18, took measurements for comparison, and swapped back and forth between 70mm and 80mm stems. I'll be going with the 70 at Raging River in the morning. It's nice to have a local MTB test track!

Tiger Mountain-ride home: I still love the weekday early morning solitude of riding Tiger MTB trails but...It was just a bit creepy and spooky after the recent fatal cougar attack. Combine that with a cougar siting a few weeks ago on the very trail that I climbed for 30 minutes or so at 7:30 AM to start my ride, and it seemed even quieter than normal. Or maybe my hearing was a bit sharper than usual...Last night's brief rain made for mostly great dirt, but that was cancelled out a bit by slimy roots and rocks. Loving the Gerks demo MY19 Epic. Thanks to my great wife for dropping me off at the TH!

HP-Grand Ridge RT-Duthie: One to one correspondence. After riding five straight days at Chelan Camp, for the last ten days I have ridden every other day with a rest day in between. Thanks to the rest days, the quality of my rides has been high. I was aboard the Gerks Cycles MY18 Epic today.

Olallie Jollly-Change Peak: Secret Summer Weekend Hideaway-should I let the cat out of the bag? I used Strava to identify how many people rode Raging River, Tiger, and Olallie yesterday (Saturday). Olallie was by far the least busy. Today I passed sixteen people while going up the very long and hard Olallie climb, but zero riders coming down toward me. I didn't even have to leave that early to be the first to the top. I also saw zero hikers and runners, and even coming back down wasn't bad, as Olallie has great sight lines. Besides, there just were not that many riders headed up toward me.

Raging River's new 2018 trails for the first time: Fadeaway is not fading away. I should be fitter at this time of the year, or maybe "could be" is more realistic? I've been doing lots of long climbs and have faded on every one of them, even when I wasn't going that hard at the start like today. Fatigue from TMR is likely a factor. RR has the best dirt conditions right now, and it was nice to have the new one-way trails.

Grand Ridge-Duthie-Soaring Eagle: Somewhat more suspicious summer sounds and silence...Today was my first MTB ride since the tragic cougar attack on Saturday that killed a cyclist on a remote FS gravel road. I've spent 3000 hours (or about 30,000 miles) riding mountain bikes in the PNW forests and mountains, and I have never seen a cougar. I might have seen one fifteen years ago on a hike, but I can't be sure. I avoid the trails on weekends when they are crowded, and most of the time ride solo weekday mornings. I paid more attention than normal when I heard a loud cracking sound today in the brush off the trail, and not two minutes later I saw a brown blur dive off of the trail into the brush. It's likely that both animals were deer, but I can't be sure. That's kind of creepy.

Chelan Camp Day 4 Manson Loop. I rode up the first climb with the lead three riders and then fell back to lend some encouragement to other riders. Unfortunately, that meant that I never saw the threesome again, but I enjoyed doing a cornering and descending clinic for the rest of the crew.

Chelan Camp Day 3: Pateros-Bridgeport-Bridgeport Hill-McNeil Canyon ... Absolutely the BEST CHELAN CAMP EVER!!! It's our ninth annual camp and this year we have had a spectacular group of people, light traffic, and great karma.

Cycle U Chelan Camp Day 2 Navarre Coulee-Union Valley climb: Flexibility Focus. I tried to ride both up and down with as many riders as possible. I did the two mile climb out of Chelan with the front group. Of course, nobody knew I was there, since I was last wheel and nobody was talking. I waited at the tunnel to ride through with another group. I rode the Navarre Coulee climb with 4-5 different small groups. I took videos of a group as we descended down to the lake. I pacelined over to the Union Valley climb and took more videos on the descent. All ride long, I offered tips and encouragement. We have a wonderful group this year!

2018 Cycle U Chelan Camp Day 1: I Haven't Done THAT for a While. Due to uncharacteristically inclement weather, we changed the Day 1 route. We rode in a steady light rain for the first 15 miles. I had my rain bike, but only one other person had fenders. It was the first time I've been on a wet group ride in a loooonng time. Despite that, we had a great ride.

Big Daddy Badger Mountain: I love to climb just about anything, but this one is really special (and SERIOUSLY difficult). I felt okay on the bottom half, but cracked/faded badly on the upper section. Either I should have a lot more fitness at this time of year, or I just don't handle the heat the way I used to. It was only in the 80s, but the "track temp" must have been about 110 when I was crawling up the last mile before the first top at over 11% avg grade. With Badger, you start with 8 miles of climbing, and then have some rollers through really cool terrain. You finish with about five more miles of climbing (but at a lower grade) before a screaming descent down to Waterville. (Actual MHR 164)

Grand Ridge-Duthie-Soaring Eagle: Summers first reminder of why we are so lucky...and it's not even summer. We've had a few warm days in a row, including yesterday's 88 degrees. While it felt good to ride and walk 2.5m in the heat on Monday, today's 75 felt really, really great. Today would be a very typical summer day in the PNW, and I am looking forwards to many days just like it.

MTB 1:16:00 [3] 13.4 mi (10.6 mph) +1711ft
ahr:114 max:140 weight:148.6lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge ride plans cancelled due to mid-summer weather. Actually, 85 degrees is on the warm end for any time during the summer in the Seattle area. My plan was to rest up for riding and coaching four straight days at Chelan Camp later in the week, but it was too nice to do that. I felt a bit tired from the get-go from yesterday's road ride in warm temps, so I did a very short ride. I figured riding 4 hours in the heat wouldn't be the best idea.

Redmond-Duvall-Carnation: Depot Day carryover spoils Sundays. I always preferred to lead the HOWC on Sunday because traffic was lighter, but Saturday mornings were still pretty good. That's changed in the last few years, as there are just so many more people on the roads. I used to call Saturday Depot Day because traffic was so much heavier than Sunday morning that I figured everyone was running off to Home Depot, BBB, etc, all at the same time. Sunday morning is no longer the best time of the week to ride the road bike. Weekdays from 10 AM to about 2 PM is the real sweet spot.

Grand Ridge RT-Duthie: A reunion of sorts. It's been nine days since I have ridden GR, which must be a record for a period when I was in town the whole time.

Hiking 53:00 [2] 2.6 mi (2.9 mph) +722ft

Squak Mountain back yard: Taking advantage of incredible proximity. Living on Squak in the midst of a lush green forest has its advantages. I'm still feeling Tuesday's pretty brutal MTB ride, so getting the blood flowing with easy paced walking in the woods felt good. What were we thinking when we lived in Downtown Seattle for ten years without the sound of the wind and rain in the trees (or rather, without trees at all)? We're spoiled forever now.

Triple serving of Olallie Jolly for 2018's first Tough Bastard Ride (dedicated to Chris Ragsdale). To help prepare people that I am coaching for a really hard event, I build into the plan what I used to call a "Hard Ride." "Tough Bastard" is more descriptive and accurate. Basically, it is an Hors Categorie ride, a ride that is harder than a typical hard ride, and one that should be difficult to complete. There are some physiological adaptations from this type of ride, but mostly it is designed to be a mental thing. Based on how I faded the first time up the climb, I knew that it would not be easy for me to complete this ride...but that's what I wanted! The third time up, I felt like a snail could climb faster than I was, but I caught and overtook two guys half my age. That helped to put a smile (briefly) on my face as I struggled onward and upward. Perhaps I should just call these rides "Chris Ragsdale" rides, because he is the toughest bastard I've ever seen on a bike.

Hobart-Renton-Newcastle: A hunting we will go. A bald eagle was gliding above me as I rode on the Cedar River Trail. I guess he was actually fishing, not hunting, unless he was eyeing me.

A walk in the (Lake Sammamish State) park. Tracy and I filled up the tank at Costco and then parked the car. We walked to the Issaquah Farmers Market and around Lake Sammamish Park, then finished up with some grocery shopping when we got back to the car. It was the first time we have been to the spot where Issaquah Creek empties into Lake Sammamish.

Love the Olallie Jolly two times. I don't have the fitness yet to ride up a climb as long and hard as Ollalie once, let alone twice. Since, my first trip of the year to O three weeks ago, I've been making a steady effort up the climb the first time, and taking it easy on the second trip. My fitness is improving incrementally, and I can tell that by how much I fade on the first climb and how I feel on the second lap. I think I am in a good place for early May.

Grand Ridge-Duthie-Soaring Eagle: There are some unbelievably great and wonderful people in this world. One of them is named Chen, and boy, did he save my bacon. The details aren't important, but I had a mechanical problem at the point of my ride when I was farthest from home. I was scratching my head and trying to MacGyver a solution, when Chen came riding up. He immediately volunteered to ride home, drive back to Soaring Eagle, and take me home...which he did. Chen is a management consultant. He was born in Beijing and educated in the US. His father has been the chief rocket scientist in China for the last forty years. Chen was incredibly personable and needless to say, it was an interesting drive home. Chen's specialty is helping companies bridge the cultural and business gaps between the US and Asia. Based on my experience, the current administration should hire him.

HP-Grand Ridge RT: Fifty shades of grey and one degree of wetness. The sky was dark grey when I left on my ride, and the sun was emerging for the rest of the week when I got back home. It was a good day for my Oakley photochromic sunglasses. The trails were a degree too wet for hero dirt, but that just meant great conditions and a slightly dirty bike.
